Digital Signal Processing

This document provides an introduction to digital signal processing (DSP). It defines DSP as the analysis, interpretation, and manipulation of signals that have been converted from analog to digital form. The document outlines the needs for signal processing, defines DSP, and categorizes analog versus digital signal processing. It discusses the advantages of DSP, such as greater noise immunity and ability to transmit signals over long distances. Finally, it lists several applications of DSP, including digital filtering, video/audio compression, speech processing, image processing, and radar/sonar processing.

Introduction:
• Digital: operating by the use of discrete signal
to represent data in the form of numbers.
• Signal: A parameter(electrical quantity or
effect) that can be varied in such a way as to
convey information.
• Processing: A series operation performed
according to programmed instructions.
Definition of Signal Processing:
• SIGNAL PROCESSING
is the analysis,
interpretation and
manipulation of like
sound, images, time-
varying measurement
values and sensor
data etc.
Needs of signal processing:
• When a signal is transmitted from one point
to another there is every possibility of
contamination/deformation of the signal by
external noise.
• So to retrieve the original signal at the
receiver suitable filters are to be used.
i.e The signal is processed to obtain the pure
signal.
Definition of DSP:
• Analog waveform is sliced into equal
segments and the waveform amplitude is
measured in the middle of each segment.
• The collection of measurements make up the
digital representation of the waveform.
Categories of DSP:
• Analog signal
processing

• Digital signal
processing
Analog signal processing:
• Signals that have not been digitized, as in
classical radio, telephone, radar and television
systems.
• This involves linear electronic circuits such as
passive filters, active filters, additive mixers,
integrators and delay lines.
• It also involves non-linear circuits such as
multiplicators, phase-locked loops, voltage-
controlled oscillators
Digital signal processing:
• Signals that have been digitized, processing is
done by general-purpose computers or by
digital circuits such as ASICs, specilized digital
signal processors,etc.
Advantages of DSP:
• The main advantage of digital signals over
analog signals is that the precise signal level of
the digital signal is not vital.
• Digital signals can convey information with
greater noise immunity.
• It enables multi-directional transmission
simultaneously.
• It is more secure.
Continued….
• Enables transmission of signals over a long
distance.
• Digital signals typically use less bandwidth.
• Size is small.
Applications of DSP:
Digital signal processing has variety of
applications like as follows
• Digital filtering
• Video compression
• Audio compression
• Speech processing
• Image processing
• RADAR and Sonar processing
