S38C steel will meet the specifications of section 080M30 of the BS standard. S45C steel can be found in section 080M40 of the BS standard. S45C steel has a higher yield strength of 435MPa compared to 38C steel at 400MPa for hot rolled bars between 16mm and 40mm in size. S45C also has a higher hardness range of 152-201 HRc versus 142-190 HRc for 38C steel in the normalized condition. Overall, C45 steel has better strength properties than 38C steel according to reference BS970.
