Nitroglycerin is used to treat ischemic chest pain by relaxing vascular smooth muscle. It can be administered as a 0.4mg sublingual tablet or spray up to every 5 minutes for a maximum of 3 doses (1.2mg) or as a transdermal patch. Contraindications include blood pressure below 100mm Hg or having already received the maximum dose. Side effects include hypotension, reflex tachycardia, and headaches.
