Action Research

Action research is an iterative process that involves practitioners studying their own environment and problems in order to guide and improve their decisions and actions. It traces back to the early 20th century work of John Dewey and Kurt Lewin. Action research encourages teachers to collaborate to examine their assumptions and beliefs in order to reform educational practices. The process generally involves planning, taking action, observing outcomes, reflecting on results, and revising plans in continuous cycles. Collaboration is seen as an advantage, allowing teachers to share problems and work as a research community.

Definitions of Action Research

 Action Research…
 is a three-step spiral process of (1) planning which
involves reconnaissance; (2) taking actions; and (3)
fact-finding about the results of the action. Kurt Lewin,
1947. (Miller, n.d.)
 is the process by which practitioners attempt to study
their problems scientifically in order to guide, correct,
and evaluate their decisions and actions. Stephen
Covey, 1953. (Miller, n.d.)

WHAT?
Action Research History
•Traced back to the early works of John Dewey in the
1920s and Kurt Lewin in the 1940s,
•Stephen Covey and others at Teachers College of
Columbia University introduced the term action
research to the educational community in 1949.
•Covey (1953) defined action research as the process
through which practitioners study their own practice to
solve their personal practical problems.

curriculum
• improving their work environment, professionalizing
teaching, developing policy
• can be used as an evaluative tool

Teacher research has its roots in action research.

and/or challenges which are of interest to
them;
 leads to some action, a better way to
produce results; and

Advantages of Collaborative AR
Burns (1999) identifies two advantages.
(1) “Collaborative action research processes
strengthen the opportunities for the results of
research on practice to be fed back into
educational systems in a more substantial and
critical way” (p. 13).

(2) “They have the advantage of encouraging
teachers to share common problems and to
work cooperatively as a research community to
examine their existing assumptions, values and
beliefs” (p. 13).
