ARC 313 - Lecture 8

The total scope of a project includes the project scope and product scope. The project scope management plan describes how the project scope will be defined, developed, and verified. It also describes how the work breakdown structure will be created and defined and how the project scope will be managed and controlled. The product scope refers to the features and functions that characterize the product, service, or result being produced. Scope planning involves creating a project scope management plan. Defining the scope is important for estimating costs, resources, schedule, and risks, and to prevent scope creep. The scope statement includes defining objectives, requirements, boundaries, deliverables, constraints,

Lecture no.8
Defining the scope

Lecturer: Ahmed El Sayed

Total scope

 Total scope = Project scope + product scope

 The project scope management plan is the document that

describes:
 how the project scope will be defined, developed, and verified;
 how the work breakdown structure will be created and defined; and
 how the project scope will be managed and controlled by the project
team.

 The product scope is the features and functions that characterize

a product, service, or result.

 Scope planning is the process of creating a project scope

management plan.
Project scope Management

 The project scope management plan describes work

processes that will enable the project team to:

 Develop a detailed project scope statement;

 Create
the work breakdown structure and describe how it will
be maintained and approved;

 Specify
how formal verification and acceptance of the
completed project deliverables will be obtained; and

 Control
how changes to the approved project scope will be
proposed, accepted, and managed.
Why to define scope?

 To estimate:
 how much a project would cost,
 how many (and what type of) workers were needed,
 how long a project would take,
 what risks were involved,
 what quality standards would be invoked without first
understanding what work the project includes.
 To prevent socpe creep:
 Problems with adding things to the scope
 Problems with impressing the customer while implementing
How to define scope?
Scope statement
Defining project objectives

 Why is the project being undertaken?

 What is the benefit to be achieved or problem/issue to be
overcome by the project?
 How will the project stakeholders decide whether to accept the
project deliverables?
 What target values will the project deliverables need to
achieve?
 How will the project be measured?
 What tradeoffs of scope, quality, cost, or schedule will be
acceptable?
Scope description, project requirements, boundaries,
deliverables, constraints, and assumptions

 The project scope description asks what characteristics the

project deliverables need to possess.
 The project requirements statement describes
performance standards and any other applicable
standards that will be applied to the primary project
deliverables.
 The project boundaries state what is included in and what
is excluded from the project.
 Listing the primary and secondary deliverables,

 Listing the constraints and assumptions
