Texting: What it is and facts

● Texting is the activity of sending text messages on a mobile phone.


● Texting is the second most popular use for cell phones.
● Average American checks their phone 46 times per day
● The average adult spends a total of 23 hours a week texting
● Text messages are read on average in under five seconds
● It takes the average person 90 minutes to respond to email, but only 90
seconds to respond to a text message
● Text messages have a 98% open rate, while email has only a 20% open rate
Sexting: What it is and facts
● the activity of sending text messages that are about sex or intended to
sexuallyexcite someone
● About 22% of teen girls have admitted to sending these photos, where only 18%
of boys have admitted to the same thing. This could be because boys will
pressure girls to send these photos more often than girls will pressure boys.
● Of the 70% of teen girls who have sexted, 61% have said that they did so
because they were pressured.
● When it comes to sexting sexually explicit written messages, more boys send
them than girls.
● Statistics show that 24% of high school aged students (between the ages of 14
and 17), and 33% of college students (between the ages of 18 to 24), have at
one time or another, sent a nude or semi nude photo to another person.
Pros:
➢ Efficient means of communication.
➢ Texts do not require Internet connection; therefore, they can be sent anytime and
anywhere.
➢ For some, sending a text is cheaper than having a voice call.
➢ Helps maintain relationships with family and friends.

➢ Can have the psychological benefit of reducing feelings of loneliness.

➢ Misinterpretation of texts
➢ Unable to take back what you said
➢ Delayed responses, versus regular conversations
➢ Less intimate than face-to-face conversations

➢ Cyber bullying
➢ Texts can be sent anonymously

➢ Involved individuals can be charged as sex

How parents can prevent and control
sexting and texting

1. Stay up to date with trends:


a. Parents can stay updated with apps children and be aware of the meanings of internet acronyms.
2. Provide children with clear boundaries around technology use:
a. Parents can help their children avoid texting and sexting by limiting and filtering their children’s access to
smartphones and the Internet.
b. Give children a “dumb phone” which will only allow them to call and receive phone calls
c. Parents can require their children to hand in their phone at bedtime to prevent any temptation to text.
3. Teach your child how to reason and think
a. Explain the consequences of their choices
b. Ask if they have any questions on current events that are going on related to sexting or texting
4. Tell them to think about how a text message might be read and understood before sending it. Also, encourage your kids to:

a. ignore texts from people they don't know


b. learn how to block numbers from their cell phone
c. avoid posting their cell phone number online
d. never provide financial information in response to a text
How schools can prevent and control
sexting and texting

1. Electronics should be put away until the end of the day


2. Zero tolerance rule- Highly enforced rules during school hours
3. Educating the students about sexting and texting in health ed classes
4. Have parent student mandatory meetings
