1. The document discusses the history and working of Short Message Service (SMS) including how SMS messages are sent from mobile phones, websites, emails, and messengers. 2. It explains that when an SMS message is sent, it first reaches the Short Message Service Center which then communicates with the Home Location Register to determine the destination phone's status before sending or storing the message. 3. While SMS has limitations like maximum character counts, the introduction of GPRS and future 5G networks will allow enhanced multimedia messaging capabilities while SMS continues to effectively deliver text messages.

Working of SMS
•Introduction
•History
•What is SMS?
•Working
•From mobile phones
•From websites
•Mobile to mobile
•From E-mails
•from messengers
•General Packet Radio Service
•Advantages
•Conclusion
Introduction

•Mobile phones in modern era

•One disadvantage
•When user is busy Or out of coverage area
•Solution is SMS
•Sending and receiving E-mails
•All these are possible because of SMS
History
•Started in 1991 by European Standard for
Digital Wireless
•Slowly other networks like
NEXTEL,PRIMCO,BELL SOUTH MOBILITY
•Initially They had their own Protocols
•Slowly Extended Between the networks
•All these organizations collaborated to form
GSM
•SMS is a part of GSM phase 1standard
•First text message from PC to mobile was sent by
GSM network in 1992 by United Kingdom
•By 2000 wireless communication acquired all
facilities like SMS to the users
•Mobile service providers started new offers to
attract customers
•In the beginning SMS was provided for FREE of cost
•Traffic in network has overflowed
•So charging for SMS started
What is SMS?

•Sending a text message from one mobile to another

mobile or to fax machine or to any ip address is called
a SMS
•Network system that supports sms is called Global
Standard For Mobiles (GSM)
•GSM is also called as global system for mobile
Communication
Working of SMS

•When a message is sent from a mobile it

first reaches Short Messages Service Center
(SMSC)
•From there message will send a request to
the Home Location Register
•Home location register searches for the
destination mobile and gives its status to
SMSC
•As per the status from HLR, messages will
be sent or stored for later transmission by
SMSC
•Storing or sending of messages is called as
Forward System
Working of SMS

•If the destination number is unavailable then

message will be retransferred
•Till then it is stored in mobile service stores
•Band width of SMS is very Low
•This allows small packets of data transfer
•With the arrival of GPRS the delivery success rate
has increased and time of delivery has decreased
•SMS allows only 160 characters including spaces
for transmission
•Extra characters will be truncated.
Working of SMS
•SMS is optimized in two methods
•Point to point and Point to Omni Point
•In point to point operator will not indulge
•A dedicated link will be established between
mobile station and network
•It is subdivided into Message Mobile originated
and Message Mobile Terminated
•Mobile originated corresponds to send list
•Mobile terminated corresponds to received list
•Delivery reports will also be sent with these
techniques
•In point to point 160 characters are allowed
whereas in point to omni point only 93
characters are allowed
Sending SMS from Mobile Phones

•Most of us are aware of this

•We have different kinds of menus displayed in
mobile phones
•For sending a message scroll to message option
and press OK button,
•Different options like read, write message will
appear
•Go to write message type the required message
and press ok
•Then enter the destination mobile number and
press ok
•Message will be sent to the desired number
•Similar is the way of reading a message
From websites
•Many websites provide free services
of sending sms to all its users
•All we have to do is to register with
the site

From e-mails
•Sms can be sent from email also
•Destination phone number is the mail id
to send the message

Ex: [email protected]
From mobiles to e-mails

•Just type the mail id and text message and send it to

the relative service provider number and it will send ur
message to corresponding mail
•EX: 54333 for idea

From messengers
•Today many people are spending their valuable time
in chatting at cyber cafes
•We can even send sms to mobiles from messengers
EX: yahoo , rediff bol etc
Accessing of messengers:

•We can also access messengers on mobiles

•After login we can chat as usually like in internet
•Just type ur id and password and send to
8242(yahoo) and we can login to our messenger
•All the users online view a status message that
“I am On SMS “ at ur id
•Similarly we can chat to them by typing their id
and by sending it to 8242
Sending an email from mobile :

•We can also send email from mobile

•All we have to do is type ip address , subject and
message body and send it to short message
centre(54333 in idea) and it will send the mail to
the destination
•After reaching destination a report will be sent to
the sender
•We can even send fax messages from mobiles by
selecting fax option
•In future we can expect sending of sms to land
phones also.
•Sun innovations company from
rajasthan has built a new software
called AJAY SANDESH which when
deployed by basic telephone service
providers then we can send sms from
land lines to mobiles also.
•For example TATA basic phone service
is providing this service at present
•This is done by a CDMA phone with
message options
•Besides sending sms we can get
different kinds of options like
downloading ringtones, logos ,
screensavers, pictures, etc.
•All the data part and graphic part will be
sent with the help of this short message
service only
•Presently we can only send text and
picture messages
•With introduction of 3G network we can
even send large sized multimedia files ,
video clips etc
General packet radio service
(GPRS)
•It is an overlay network on existing circuit switched GSM
network
•It offers a migration path towards 3G networks
•GPRS is suited for delivering internet based value added
services to mobile subscribers
•GPRS permits quick and efficient content delivery
corresponding to a mobile web page
•GPRS helps to handle the fast growing SMS traffic also
•GPRS is regarded as perfect bearer for internet access
Advantages of SMS

•Sms is available in both GPRS covered and non GPRS

networks also.
•It offers store and forward capability , full tele service
characteristics
•Message length limitation can be overcome through
segmentation and re assembly functionality in the Short
message service centre (SMSC)
•This segmented data can be delivered within one transaction
but in multiple short messages.
•Wireless application protocol is widely accepted and
endorsed by all the service provider to offer internet access
to their users
CONCLUSION

•SMS is seemed to supplement GPRS and viewed as a

complement to GPRS
•GPRS does not offer a replacement for SMS nor does
it diminish SMS importance in Mobile networks
•As the Short Message Service Centers will evolve into
Multimedia Message Centers in order to meet the
requirements of mobile users
•Even though SMS delivery path has been changed
with arrival of GPRS , the delivery success rate and
time have been improved a lot with the use of same
SMS
•The entire service environment remains unaffected
by network enhancements and does not need to
change because of GPRS
