The Bahamas is an archipelago of islands located in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Florida. It has a total land area of around 5,382 square miles and is made up of low-lying coral islands rather than volcanic landforms. Tourism is a major industry for the Bahamas, providing around 50% of jobs. The population is predominantly of African descent and the islands were originally settled by the British in the 1600s. The Bahamas gained independence from the UK in 1973 and has a parliamentary democracy with a prime minister as head of government.

 The Bahamas are made up of nearly 700 atolls


 Atolls are islands that were originally made up of coral reef.
 Because it is made of coral reef rather than volcanic activity the islands are
very low-lying and flat
Size

 The Bahamas are an archipelago so there is little land area.


 The estimated amount of land in the Bahamas is 5,382 mi² or 13,940 km²
 This is comparable to the state of Connecticut which has 5,543 mi²
Climate

 The temperature of the Bahamas is always very warm


 There is a rainy season in the Bahamas that takes place around May to
October.

 There is a wide array of wildlife in  There is also many different types

History
Who settled there

 The original person to discover these lands was Christopher Columbus and he
claimed this land for Spain
 This land held very little interest for Spain except for the native peoples who
either was brought into slavery or died of diseases
 The Spanish never settled there
 The British later claimed the islands for there own and started a community
on one of the islands
 In the late 16th to early 17th century the Bahamas became a haven for pirates
 During the 18th century many African Americans came to the Bahamas and
have ever since outnumbered the Caucasian population
Independence

 On July 10, 1973, The Bahamas became Independent from a long and
peaceful British rule.
Wars/battles

 The Battle of Nassau took place March 2 through March 3 of 1776


 An assault was launched against the British owned island of Nassau during the
American revolutionary war.
 It was a naval and amphibious assault
 It was the first cruise and one of the first engagements of the United States Navy
 The United states was victorious.

 A white cross is on the shore to show the landing of Christopher Columbus

 The Bahamas has a constitutional monarchy with a prime minister as head of


government similar to Britain
 It also has a parliamentary system with two houses

elections of 2012

 A very large portion of people in the Bahamas work in tourism or international

coming in second and Asian people are the vast minority

 The Bahamas has an attendance rate of 92%
Safety and Crime

 Crime is rising along with tourism in the country


 There are many cases of petty thievery in the Bahamas currently
 Other, more serious, crimes are also increasing such as armed robbery and sexual
assault.

Medicine and Health

 In recent times, health in the Bahamas have improved greatly all over the
Bahamas.
 Nassau and Grand Bahama have been especially affected
 New healthcare facilities have been established and are giving care
