Types of connections
• Point to point-dedicated lines between two
devices
• Mutipoint - more than 2 specific devices
sharing a link.
types of topologies
• Mesh
• Star
• Bus
• Ring
• Hybrid
Mesh topology
Mesh topology
• Every device has a dedicated point to point
link to every other device.

• Example- connection of telephone regional

offices
• Each regional office needs to be connected to
every other regional office.
Advantages of a mesh
• more privacy or security.
• If one link become unusable, it does not
incapacitate the entire system.
• Elimination of traffic problem
Disadvantages of mesh topology
• Installation and reconnection are difficult.
• Hardware required can be expensive.
Star topology
Star topology
• Every device has a dedicated point to point
link only to a central controller, the hub.
• Devices not directly linked to one another
unlike the mesh.
• Controller acts as an exchange.
• 1st data is set to controller which relays the
data to the other connected devices.
Advantages of star topology
• Less expensive as compared to mesh.
• easy to install and reconfigure.
• Robustness.
Disadvantages of star topology
• dependency of whole topology on one single
central hub.
• More cabling requires as compared to ring or
bus.
• Used in LAN(local area network).
Bus topology
Bus topology
• Use a common backbone to connect all devices.
• A single cable, the backbone functions as a
shared communication medium that devices
attach or tap into with an interface connector.
• A device wanting to communicate with another
device on the network sends a broadcast
message onto the wire that all other devices
see, but only the intended recipients actually
accepts and processes the message.
Advantages
• If one computer fails in the network the others
are still not affected and they continue to work.
• Very simple and easy set up
• Use the least amount of cable
• Well-suited for temporary or small networks
not requiring high speeds.
• Easy identification of cable faults.
• Cost effective.
disadvantages
• Limited cable length and number of stations.
• If there is a problem with the cable, the entire
network breaks down.
• Maintenance costs may be higher in the long run.
• Performance degrades as additional computers are
added or heavy traffic(shared bandwidth)
• Slower data transfer rate than other topologies.
Ring topology
Ring network topology
• Every device has exactly two neighbors for
communication purposes.
• All message travel through a ring in the same
direction(either “clockwise” or
“counterclockwise”).
• A failure in any cable or device breaks the loop
and can take down the entire network.
advantages
• All computers have equal access to network.
• Even with many user network processing is
even.
• Allows error checking and acknowledgement.
disadvantages
• Failure of one network can affect the whole
network.
• It is difficult to troubleshoot the ring network.
• Adding or removing computers disturbs the
networks.
Hybrid

• Combination of 1 or more topologies.
