TEACHING OF WRITING

The main reason for teaching writing is to help students express


their thoughts in words.

 writing for learning : where writing is used as a practice tool


to work language being studied

 writing for writing : where writing is directed at developing


the skills as writers.
 Writing activities are an important means for consolidating language learned
in other skill areas ( listening , speaking and reading).
 Writing activities provide variety and can be in valuable in maintaining
motivation , by serving as a break from oral or reading activities.
 Writing activities serve as a record of what has been learnt orally , and also
help retention of vocabulary and sentence structures.
 Integrating writing with other skills makes learning event realistic and
demonstrates to students the usefulness of writing in real –life.
 Writing provides useful and convenient means for testing large numbers of
student.
 A step-by-step process in which some mastery at one level is essential
before the learner advances to the next level .
 The writing process is a series of steps to help you write a paper. It is like
using a map to get to unfamiliar place .

 Product approach:

◦ Students has given the greatest importance to producing error free writing of different

genres.

◦ Every the student produces the same composition skills .

◦ The students would have produced the sample of the target genre.
 Teacher provides appropriate guidance at each stage in process of evolving a

text.

 Teacher must know the procedures and process as well as what skills and

strategies.

 Generating ideas and creating motivation to write.
- Brainstorming
- Quick-write activity

 Planning and organizing.
- Enables students to think
- Group works
 Using comparisons when describing.
Example: It was as sweet as honey

 Providing models.
- Appropriate to different proficiency level of the students
 Establishing criteria of excellence using:
- Interesting comparisons
- Elaboration

 Writing first drafts.


- Helps in preparing the next lesson
 Revision
- Choose a few good drafts done by pupils.
- Make copies for the whole class.
- Discuss the selected drafts in the class so that pupils able to:
i) Add
ii) Delete
iii) Substitute
iv) Reorder
- Let students work in groups.
- Conduct a class discussion if needed.
- Read aloud portion of two or three students’ well written drafts.
- If found students who had completely gone off-track, an individual
conferencing should be arranged.
 Editing
- Let students to edit each other’s work.
- Write out the final copy neatly.
