The Neo-Freudians: Overview + Adler

Alfred Adler was a colleague of Freud who later developed his own school of thought called neo-Freudianism. Some key aspects of Adler's theory included striving for superiority to overcome feelings of inferiority from early childhood, and that birth order influences personality development and psychological health. Specifically, he believed firstborns are prone to feeling dethroned and like problem children, middles develop strong achievement striving, and lasts and only children may feel pampered or inadequate. However, current research has limitations and calls some of Adler's birth order claims into question.
