Sat Test Math

This document provides an overview of key concepts in functions for the SAT math test. It defines a function as a relation between two variables where each input is mapped to exactly one output. It discusses domain and range, types of functions including even, odd, and other classifications. It also covers functional operations such as addition, multiplication, division, and composition. Finally, it defines the inverse of a function and how to derive it by exchanging variables and reflecting the original graph over the line y=x.

FUNCTION
FUNCTION
• Definition of Function
• Domain & Range
• Function Types
• Function Operations
 Inverse of Function
Definition
• Relation between two variables x, y
• For each value of the input x, there is ONLY ONE value of the output y
x+y=1 x y
2 5
5,7
y = x2
0 7
x2 + y2 = 1 1 89
Domain & Range
• Domain: all value of x
• Range: all value of y
• [a,b] value from a to b inclusive of a,b
• (a,b) value from a to be exclusive of a and b
Types of function
• Even function: f(x) = f(-x) for all value of x
Symmetrical about the y axis
Degree of each term of x is even
• Odd function –f(x) = f(-x) for all value of x
Symmetrical about the origin (1800 rotational symmetry about the origin)
Degree of each term of x is odd
• Neither even or odd
Functional Operations
• Addition/ Substraction
(f ± g)(x) = f(x) ± g(x)
• Multiplication
(fg)(x) = f(x) . g(x)
• Division
(f/g) (x) = f (x) / g(x)
• Composition
(f • g) (x) = f(g(x))
Inverse of function
1
• f-1 (x) ≠ 𝑓(𝑥)
• x and y are exchanged
 Replace f(x) as y
 Exchange x and y
 Solve for the new y
 Let y as f-1 (x)
• Inverse graph of a function
 Reflect the graph of function over line y = x
