Yr10 Expanding Expressions2

This document discusses techniques for expanding algebraic expressions, including: 1. Expanding binomial expressions using the distributive property, such as (a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd. 2. Expanding perfect squares, such as (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2. 3. Expanding the difference of two squares, such as (a + b)(a - b) = a2 - b2. Examples are provided for expanding expressions using these techniques. Students are assigned homework questions applying these expansion methods.

Chapter 8

Quadratic expressions and

quadratic equations

8A
Expanding expressions
Starter questions
 Simplify the following :
-x - 3y + 4x
2 2 2
-24mn 2x + 8x
2

12n 4x

 Expand and simplify the following:

6(3x - 2) -3(5x +3) (2x - 3)(3x + 4) (x - 3)(x - 7)
Key points
 Like terms have the same pronumeral part. They
can be added and subtracted to form a single term.
For example:
7x -11x = -4x
4a 2b - 7ba 2 = -3a 2b

 The distributive law is used to expand brackets

a(b + c) = ab + ac 3(x + 5) = 3x +15

a(b - c) = ab - ac x( y - 4) = xy - 4x
Expanding simple expressions
 Expand and simplify where possible
a. -3(x - 5)

b. 2x(1- x)

c. 2
(14x + 3)
7

d. x(2x -1) - x(3- x)

Expanding expression

 Expanding binomial products

 Perfect squares
 Difference of two squares
Expanding binomial products
 (a+b)(c+d) is called a binomial product.
Binomials are expressions that have 2 terms.
(a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc +bd
 Expand and simplify:
a. (2x -1)(3x +5)

b. (3x - 4)(x + 2)
Exercise
Expand and simplify the following:
① (5x+3)(2x+7)

② (7x -2)(8x -2)

③ -4(x+9)(x+2)
Perfect squares
 Expand perfect squares
(a+b) =(a+b)(a+b)=a +2ab+b
2 2 2

(a-b) =(a-b)(a-b)=a -2ab+b

2 2 2

Examples:
a) (x + 2) 2

b) (x - 4)2
Expanding perfect squares
 Expand the following
① (x + 8) 2

② (x - 6) 2

③ (3x + 4) 2

④ (5x - 2) 2
Difference of two squares
 Expand difference of two squares
(a + b)(a - b) = a 2 - b2

 Example:
(2x +1)(2x -1)
Expand difference of two squares
Expand and simplify
① (8x - 7)(8x + 7)

② (2x - 9)(2x + 9)

③ (4x + 5)(4x - 5)
