Misconception 2

1) The document summarizes a study that distributed a questionnaire to grade 9 students in Turkey to understand their conceptions of photosynthesis and plant nutrition. 2) The questionnaire contained 7 open-ended questions about key areas of plant biology. The study found many students had misconceptions about how plants obtain mass, why plants are called producers, and other fundamental concepts. 3) For example, most students incorrectly believed water and soil were the source of plant mass growth rather than understanding plants manufacture their own organic substances through photosynthesis.

Secondary Students’ Interpretation of Photosynthesis and Plant Nutrition
technique
 A questionnaire was distributed to grade 9
students (14-15 years old) in turkey.
 A questionnaire was constructed comprising
seven open-ended questions design to test
students’ conception about important areas of
plant biology.
Concept
 Photosynthesis: process that coverts light energy
into chemical energy of sugars and other organic
compound in green plant.

 Nutrition: process by which an organism obtains

food which is used to provide energy and
materials for its life sustaining activities.
Table 1: Correct responses to
questionnaire items
No. Question Percentage of correct
answer (%)
1 Why is photosynthesis is vital for all living 20.45
organisms?
2 What is the source of weight increase in plants 19.31
during their growth?
3 Why plants are called producer? 22.72
4 It is possible for animals to survive without plants 25.00
in an ecosystem?
5 What is the atmosphere, even though living 59.09
organisms breathe it continuously?
6 Do plants carry out respiration all day or only 27.27
during some periods of the day?
7 How do plants benefit from the sun’s energy? 23.86
Question Misconception Concept
What is the Most of student The weight
source of weight answer water and increase in
increase in plants soil, 7 student plants comes
during their mentioned carbon from organic
growth? dioxide. substances,
manufactured by
the plants
themselves.
Question Misconception Concept
why are Plants are called Plants manufacture
plants called producers because they organic substances
producers? produce oxygen. On the by photosynthesis
other hand, about half of
students claimed that
most plants produce fruit
or vegetables, so can be
called producers.
Question Result
Is it possible for animals to Most students believed that
survive without plants in an animals need plant to survive
ecosystem? but only 22 students (25%)
relate this with the process of
photosynthesis.

What is the reason for keeping Approximately 52 students

carbon dioxide at an optimum understand the role of carbon
level in the atmosphere, even dioxide in photosynthesis, but
though living organism breath remaining 36 students din not
it continuously? give accurate answer for this
question.
Question Result

Do plant carry out respiration all About half of students claimed that
day or only during some period of plant undergo respiration only
the day? during the night. Only 24 students
(27.27%) answered correctly that
plants respire continuously during
the day and night

How do plants benefit from the About 24% of students correctly

sun’s energy? that plants manufacture their own
food via photosynthesis by using
the sun’s energy
Misconception
 Many students do not understand that plants absorb carbon
dioxide and water to produce organic materials.

 Most of students have misconception that living organisms obtain

energy by means other than by photosynthesis or food intake.

 Students understand the need for water, air and sunlight by plants.
But they fail to understand why these materials are important and
how they are part of the production of ‘food’.
