School Days in Biñan’ Prepared by: Jan Lyn Barrios BSBA 3D-OM The Hero’s First Teacher
Doña Teodora was Jose’s first non-formal teacher.
His account of his school days in Binan gives us a vivid glimpse of the kind of elementary education which Filipino boys obtained during that time. It was an education with much religion and overly strict discipline. A pupil had to study the hard way. He was whipped by the teacher to make him learn his lessons or to behave well. On her lap, Jose learned prayers and the alphabet at the age of three. Jose Rizal and his Mother Private Tutors of Rizal Maestro Celestino was Jose’s first private tutor. Maestro Lucas Padua was the second private tutor. Maestro Leon Monroy became the hero’s tutor in Spanish and Latin. He was a classmate of Don Francisco.This old teacher lived at the Rizal home and instructed Jose. Unfortunately he did not lived long and died five months later. After Monroys death yhe heros parents decided to send their gifted son to a private school in Binan. The Uncles of Rizal Uncle Jose Albert- gave wise direction in the studies of Jose. Uncle Gregorio- instilled into the mind of Jose the love of the education. Uncle Manuel Alberto- seeing Jose was frail in nature, concerned himself with the physical development of his nephew. He also taught Jose the love for open air and admiration for the beauty of nature. He also encouraged him to learn swimming, fencing, wrestling, and other Jose Goes To Biñan
Don Leon died five months later and Jose was
sent to a private school in Biñan. One Sunday afternoon Jose after kissing the hands of his parents and tearful parting from his sister left Calamba for Binan. June 1869- Jose goes to Biñan with Paciano. He was accompanied by Paciano who acted as his second father. Carromata- the mode of transportation. They reached their destination after one and and one-half hours of drive. Aunts House- where Jose lodged. Binan First Day In School Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz- formal teacher Rizal described Maestro Justiniano as tall, thin, long necked, sharp-nosed, with a body slightly bent forward. The school was in the house of the teacher which was a small nipa hut about 30 meters from the home of Jose’s Aunt. Paciano knew the teacher quite well because he had been a pupil under him before. He introduced Jose to the teacher after which he departed to return to Calamba The school was in Maestro Justiniano’s house. First School Brawl
Pedro (the teacher’s son)- Rizal met the
bully, Pedro he was angry at this bully for making fun of him during his conversation with the teacher.He challenged Pedro into a fight. Rizal having learned he art of wrestling from his uncle Manuel. He defeated the bigger boy. Andres Lakundanan- challenged Rizal into arm-wrestling. Rizal having the weaker arm, lost and nearly cracked his head on the sidewalk. Painting Lesson In Biñan Old Juancho-freely gave Jose painting lesson. An old painter who was the father in law of the school teacher. He was impressed by the artistic talent of the Calamba lad. Jose lured by his loved for painting spent many leisure hours at the painters studio. Jose Rizal and his classmate Jose Guevarra became apprentices of Old Juancho who also loved painting. They improved their art so that in due time they became ‘the favorite painters of the class’. Daily Life In Biñan Jose’s Daily Life in Biñan: Hears mass at 4:00 a.m or studies lesson before going to mass Goes to orchard to look for mabolo to eat. Breakfast Goes to class at 10 a.m Lunch Break Goes back to school at 2 p.m Goes home at 5 p.m Prays with Cousin Studies lessons, then draws a little Has supper Prays again Plays in the street if moon is bright Sleeps Best Student in School Jose surpassed his classmates in Spanish, Latin and other subjects. In academic studies, Rizal beat all Binan boys . He surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin and other subjects. His older classmates were jealous and squealed to the teacher whenever he had fights. They were all jealous of his intellectual superiority that they wickedly squealed to the teacher whenever Rizal had a fight outside the school, and even told lies to discredit him before the teachers eyes. Consequently the teacher had to punish Rizal Jose usually received five or six blows while laid out on a bench. Rare was the day when he was not stetched on the bench. End of Biñan Schooling December 17, 1870-Jose received a letter from his sister Saturnina informing him of the arrival of the steamer Talim. Jose left Biñan Talim- a mode of transportation the steamer that Jose rode . Arturo Camps- a Frenchman and a friend of Don Francisco, he took care of Jose during the trip. He prayed in the town church collected pebbles in the river for souvenirs. Martyrdom of GOMBURZA January 20, 1872- Cavite Mutiny February 17, 1872- Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora were implicated and executed. The GOMBURZA were leaders of the secularization movement. The martyrdom of the three priests inspired Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish tyranny. GOMBURZA Injustice to the Hero’s Mother In 1872, Doña Teodora was arrested on a malicious charge that she aided his brother Jose Alberto in trying to poison his wife. Jose Alberto planned to divorce his wife because of her infidelity Jose Alberto’s wifre connived with the Spanish lieutenant of the Guardia Civil and filed a case aginst Rizal’s mother. Antonio Vivencio del Rosario- gobernadorcillo of Calamba, helped the lieutenant arrest Doña Teodora. 50 Kilometers- Doña Teodora was made to walk from Calamba to the provincial prison in Santa SANTA CRUZ PRISON Thank You!
