Mathematics K 12 Curriculum Guide

Pentagon ABCDE has interior angles with measures: A = 95° B = 97° C = 101° D = 105° The sum of interior angles of a pentagon is 540°. 95° + 97° + 101° + 105° + x = 540° 95 + 97 + 101 + 105 + x = 540 x = 142 Therefore, the measure of angle E is 142°.

ESTABLISHING A PURPOSE FOR THE LESSON

1. What have you observed from the figures?

2. How can we solve for the missing angles

in the figures shown?
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the
students should be able to:

1. Find the measures of the missing

angles in the interior of a polygon.

PRESENTING EXAMPLES/INSTANCES OF THE NEW LESSON

Find the missing value of X from the

non-regular heptagon shown on the
previous slide.
PRESENTING EXAMPLES/INSTANCES OF THE NEW LESSON

Solution: (N-2) x 180 110 + 118 + 130 +

= (7-2) x 180 165 + 118 + 160 =
= 5 x 180 801
= 900 Therefore: 900-801
Angle x = 99
DISCUSSING NEW CONCEPTS AND PRACTICING NEW SKILLS

x
The figure shown is a non regular pentagon.

Sum of interior angles of a pentagon is:

(N-2) x 180
(5-2) x 180
3 x 180
540
Solve for x:
Therefore: 146 + 90 + 78 + 117 = 431
540 – 431 = 109
More Examples:
Find the measure of each interior angle.
Use the value of x to solve for the measure
of its angle.
m∠𝑥 = 36,

Interior Angle

An interior angle of a polygon is

an angle inside the polygon at one of
its vertices.

Interior Angle Formulas

The sum of the measure of the interior

angle of a polygon with sides is (n-2)180,
where n represents the number of sides.

Activities

Solving
Find the measure of the missing angles.
FINDING PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF CONCEPTS AND SKILLS IN DAILY LIVING

Architects and Engineers always include polygons with every plan of a house,
rooms, buildings, malls and etc. Buildings do usually have a 90 degrees corners
but not always. The cost of building any structure depends on the length of the
walls and the size of the angles – all properties of polygons. We are surrounded
by a polygons all the time.
MAKING GENERALIZATIONS AND ABSTRACTIONS ABOUT THE LESSON.

1. How can you develop a formula for finding

the sum of interior angles of a non-regular
polygon?

2. When the number of sides in a regular

polygon increases by 1, why does the
interior angle sum increase by 180°?
EVALUATION:

Okay let us play the Blast It game.

AGREEMENT

1. Create a non-regular pentagon. Name it as

Pentagon ABCDE. The measure of its angles should
be A = 95, B = 97, C = 101, D = 105, E = x. After you
draw the polygon, solve for the value of x.
