Lecture 1 - Introduction To Industrial Instrumentation
This document outlines an introduction to measurement systems presented by Dr. S. Meenatchisundaram for the class Introduction to Industrial Instrumentation (ICE 3281) at MIT Manipal from January to April 2019. It defines measurement as a process of obtaining quantity values from a measurand and discusses the key functional elements of a measurement system including primary sensing, variable conversion, manipulation, transmission, and data presentation. An example of a measurement system is provided to demonstrate these elements.

Introduction to Industrial Instrumentation (ICE 3281)
Dr. S.Meenatchisundaram, MIT, Manipal, Jan – Apr 2019 Measurement Systems:
• Measurement is a process of experimentally obtaining one or more
quantity values that can reasonably be attributed to a quantity. • An observable variable (X) is obtained from the measurand. • The sensor generates a signal variable (S) that can be manipulated (Processed, transmitted or displayed).
Introduction to Industrial Instrumentation (ICE 3281)
Dr. S.Meenatchisundaram, MIT, Manipal, Jan – Apr 2019 Measurement Systems: Measurement: •The process of comparing an unknown quantity with a standard of the same quantity (measuring length) or standards of two or more related quantities (measuring velocity). •The measurement is the process by which one can convert physical parameters to meaningful numbers.
Introduction to Industrial Instrumentation (ICE 3281)
Dr. S.Meenatchisundaram, MIT, Manipal, Jan – Apr 2019 Functional Elements of Measurement System:
• Primary Sensing Element:
• The element which is in direct contact with the measurand. • Converts the physical variable into a meaningful variable. • Receives energy from the measurand and produces an output • Some energy is always extracted during measurement process • Called as ‘loading effect’ • Measuring actual value is practically impossible. Introduction to Industrial Instrumentation (ICE 3281) Dr. S.Meenatchisundaram, MIT, Manipal, Jan – Apr 2019 Functional Elements of Measurement System: • Variable Conversion Element: • Converts signal from primary element to a more suitable form. • May be mechanical to mechanical, mechanical to electrical, etc. • Variable Manipulation Element: • A change in numerical value • Examples: Amplifiers, filters, Clipping, clamping or Hold circuits, etc.. • Data Transmission Element: • Transmit data from one place to other place • Examples: ADC/DACs, Signal amplifiers, etc • Data Presentation Element: • Present the data • Examples: Dials, Gauges, calibrated scales, displays, data loggers, recorders
