 Do you enjoy solving problems and putting your ideas into action?

 Are you curious about how things work and how to make them better?

 Are you interested in improving the environment?

 Are you socially aware and interested in helping people live better?

 If you share some of the traits, civil engineering may be the perfect career
for you.
CIVIL ENGINEERING

A professional engineering discipline that deals with the

design, Construction and Maintenance of the Physical and
Naturally built environment, including works like Roads,
Bridges, Canals, Dams, Buildings and Supporting structures.
SUB DISCIPLINES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

 Construction
 Soil mechanics and Geotechnical
 Transportation
 Water resources
 Environmental
 Forensic
 Urban planning
 Surveying
……………………And so on
STRUCTURAL

 Structural engineering is concerned with analysis and design of structures

 Structures are designed to resist natural forces such as wind,
earthquakes, Temperature & other natural and human-made forces.
CONSTRUCTION

Construction engineering involves execution of Architectural and Structural

designs within planned duration and estimated cost.
SOIL MECHANICS AND GEOTECHNICAL

Geotechnical engineers analyze the properties of soil and rock to determine

engineering properties.
Geotechnical cont…

Knowledge from the fields of geology, material science, testing, mechanics,

and hydraulics are applied by geotechnical engineers to safely and
economically design foundations, retaining walls, and similar structures.
TRANSPORTATION

Transportation engineering is concerned with moving people and goods

efficiently, safely, and in a manner conducive to a vibrant community.
Transportation cont…

Involves specifying, designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation

infrastructure which includes streets, canals, highways, rail systems,
airports, ports, and mass transits systems.
WATER RESOURCES

 Water resource Engineers design, supervise, and evaluate systems for

controlling, storing, moving, and conserving water.
 Includes providing clean drinking water, protecting beaches, preventing
floods, providing irrigation, treating wastewater, etc.
ENVIRONMENTAL

Environmental engineering deals with the treatment of chemical, biological

or thermal waste, the purification of water, air and the remediation of
contaminated sites, due to prior waste disposal or accidental
contamination
FORENSIC

Forensic engineering is the investigation of materials, products, structures

or components that fail or do not operate or function as intended, causing
personal injury or damage to property
URBAN PLANNING

Urban planning involves specifying, designing, constructing, and

maintaining streets, sidewalks, water supply networks, sewers, street
lighting, municipal solid waste management and disposal, storage depots
for various bulk materials used for maintenance and public works (salt,
sand, etc.), public parks and bicycle paths.
SURVEYING

 Surveying is the process by which a surveyor measures certain

dimensions that generally occur on the surface of the Earth.

 Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, and science of

accurately determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional position of
points and the distances and angles between them. These points are
usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish
land maps and boundaries for ownership or governmental purposes.
