Rails must be positively identified before any cutting is started:

Measurement of rail wear:

• check height of both


rails 25mm from rail end
• amount of wear must not
exceed 7mm on either
rail

Marking the gap:

Mark the welding gap clearly and accurately on


the rail head

Gap preparation:

• welding gap must be disc


or saw cut
• flame cutting or flame
washing is not permitted
• welding gap 25mm
+/- 2mm (23 to 27mm)
• position cutting disc to cut
inside the marked line

Rail cutting:

Using Wedges

Running surface
alignment:

• set vertical alignment with


wedges beneath each rail
on the first sleeper

1.5mm of lift

• on completion of alignment

be applied to the rail foot
on either side of the joint

• after luting
• during preheating
