 Mon and Wed, 12:30 – 13:45, SEN 609
 Section C
 Tue and Thurs, 11:00 – 12:15, SEN 607

 Make sure to enrol in the course on LMS as
soon as possible

4
Course outline
 Make sure to read the course outline in your
spare time as well

 This is a reading-intensive course
 You will have to read from the books
 Slides are NOT the substitute of the books
 These are just for the teacher to structure the
lecture

6
Introduction
 Codes of Ethics
 Professional engineering associations and societies,
e.g. IEEE, PEC
 Codes offer guidance, but are not a substitute
for individual capabilities for solving ethical
dilemmas

7
Engineering Ethics
 Can be seen as a field:
 That consists of responsibilities and rights of those
engaged in engineering
 Their desirable ideals and personal commitments
 The study of decisions, policies and values that are
morally desirable in engineering practice

8
Required skills for ethical engineers
 Recognizing and defining ethical issues
 Identifying relevant stake-holders and socio-
technical systems
 Collecting relevant data about stake-holders
and systems
 …continued on next slide

9
Required skills for ethical engineers
 Understanding relevant stake-holder
perspectives
 Identifying value conflicts
 Constructing viable alternative courses of
action or solution and identifying constraints
 …continued on next slide

10
Required skills for ethical engineers
 Assessing alternatives in terms of
consequences
 Engaging in reasoned dialogue or negotiations
 Revising options, plans or actions

11
Micro-ethics and Macro-ethics
 Micro-ethics considers individuals and internal
relations of the engineering profession
 Macro-ethics concerns the collective social
responsibility of the profession to make societal
decisions about technology
 Social context in which engineers practice
