Computer Hardware AND Maintenance: Unit 5 Power Supplies Ii - Dce
This document discusses computer power supplies. It describes the main components of linear and switch mode power supplies (SMPS). For SMPS, it provides a block diagram showing the five main sections: AC input, power converter, control section, output section, and voltage sense section. It explains that SMPS chops the DC input at a high frequency, which makes it more efficient than a linear power supply due to the use of feedback to control the output voltage.

There are two types of power supplies that can be
used for the pc: a) Linear power supply unit b) Switch mode power supply. Linear power supply unit-general description
• It constitute a transformer ,rectifier ,filter and
regulator(series or short type) • There is no feedback from the output voltage to input voltage side in this type of power supply • Major issues with Linear Power Supply is its bulk or size which is one account of Transformer used in the power supply Switch mode power supply(SMPS)-general description
• In a switching power supply ,the active devices that provides
regulation is always operated in a switched mode, i.e. either in cut off or in saturation. • The input dc is chopped at a high frequency(10 KHz to 100 KHz)using an active device and the converter transformer. • The transferred chopped waveform is rectified and filtered. • A sample of the output voltage is used as feed signal for the drive circuit for the switching transistor to achieve the regulation. • This type of power supply makes the use of feedback mechanism to alter output voltages per the requirement of the load. Hence, this is more efficient than linear power supply. BLOCK DIAGRAM AND WORKING OF SMPS
SMPS used in PC comprises of following five
sections: AC I/P Section Power Converter Control Section O/P Section Voltage Sense Section.
