Extraction of Keratin From Chicken Feather As One

This document summarizes a study that aims to extract keratin from chicken feathers to produce an affordable shampoo. It hypothesizes that chicken feathers are a good source of keratin, the main protein in hair and nails. The study will steam distill chicken feathers to extract keratin. This keratin solution will then be used to manufacture and test a shampoo. The goal is to determine if chicken feather keratin can effectively substitute for ingredients in commercial shampoos and provide a more affordable option without toxic chemicals. If successful, this shampoo could help people experiencing hair loss or high costs of commercial brands.

EXTRACTION OF KERATIN FROM

CHICKEN FEATHER TO BE USE IN

MAKING SHAMPOO
Introduction
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Philippine Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of

Agricultural, demand for chicken meat is forecast to rise this year as a
result of a projected improvement in the Philippine economy and a
growing population. This is the main cause why many kilos of wasted
chicken feathers are being produced by many poultry industries here in
the Philippines. Another reason is that many commercial shampoo brands
today contains many Toxic chemicals that causes hair loss to many
people. This are our reasons why we choose to make a shampoo out of
chicken feathers that are hair-friendly and are affordable to all the people
who wants to use it. Feathers are mostly made of keratin, the that's
responsible for the strength of wool, hair, fingernails, and hooves. So they
should be useful as a material.
So they should be useful as a material. Protein is an important nutrient
needed by our body to maintain body structures and is an important
ingredient for cosmetic products. Feathers are mostly made of keratin,

nutrient needed by our body to maintain body structures and is an
important ingredient for cosmetic products. Chicken feathers have high
level of keratin protein content and can become a suitable protein
source. The keratin protein solution can be used for several purposes such
as anti-aging cream, shampoo, and conditioner and for medical
purposes such as bone replacement and bone graft.
SOP (STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM)
This part of our Science Investigatory Project aims to prove and
test the effectiveness of chicken feather as a shampoo through the
following questions that are shown below:
1. Can chicken feather be an effective substitute for making
shampoo?
2. Aside from keratin, what other properties can we found in the
Chicken feather that can be benefited by those people who will use
this product?
HYPOTHESIS

 NullHypothesis: Chicken feather is not be a good source of keratin

that is the main components in making shampoo. Also, chicken feather
cannot be a substitute for shampoo.
 AffirmativeHypothesis: Chicken feather is a good source of keratin that
is the main component in making shampoo.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This product are consists of chicken feathers and some chemicals. This
product is only made for our hairs. This aims to lessen the problem in
our hairs like hair loss and dandruff. This will be done if those people
who are using chickens will help us and they will give us some of the
waste product like chicken feathers.
This product is not limited to anybody who has a problem in hair loss
and hair fall.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project aims to help the:

 To Students and Teachers:
Maintaining their hairs strong and beautiful.

 To The Community People:

To avoid Hair Loss that causes shame every time they go out
their houses and also to stop using toxic shampoos.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Chicken feather- feathers that comes from the chicken that are a good
source of keratin.
Keratin - an important protective and structural protein in the hair. The
protein that protects epithelial cells from damage or stress.
Shampoo - a hair care product, typically in the form of a viscous liquid
that is used for cleaning hair.
REVIEW OF
RELATED LITERATURE
Many people or group of Scientists prove our idea to use
chicken feathers to be the main component for making shampoo
aside from some chemicals that we are going to use. According to
them: There research was conducted to extract keratin protein from
chicken feathers. Protein is an important nutrient needed by our body
to maintain body structures and is an important ingredient for
cosmetic products. Chicken feathers have high level of keratin protein
content and can become a suitable protein source that are needed by
our body and to our hairs.
METHODOLOGY
COLLECTING OF CHICKEN FEATHER
To start the experiment, First we must get some chicken feather
about 30-50 feathers. And for the best result we must get or collect
fresh and clean feathers in order to prevent other micro-organism
substances to extracted in extraction process and if it is wet let it be
dry first before extracting it

PROCEDURE
The extraction process will be through Steam Distillation Technique
so that we can get the keratin. It requires a stainless pot with an
integral strainer, a curve pot cover, and a stainless or steel glass
receiving vessel. The consumable are water, ice, and feathers to be
extracted.
First set the pot on the heat source and fill with purified water to level
just below the strainer bottom when it is in place. A strainer will be
inserted and fill it with chicken feathers. Clear the space in the center of
the to set the receiving vessel. Position the pot cover on the top in
vertically. Make sure that the drip tip is centered over the receiving
vessel. Fill the pot cover as much ice as it hold. It is not necessary to
add water to the pot cover. Boil it up to 15-30 minutes. Get the extract
of chicken feather in the receiving vessel
