Production and Use of Hho Gas in I.C Engines: A Seminar On

This document discusses a seminar on the production and use of HHO gas (a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases) in internal combustion engines. It describes how HHO gas is produced through the electrolysis of water, and its properties. The addition of HHO gas to engine intake air is said to improve engine performance and reduce emissions by extending the flammability limit of fuels. Challenges in using HHO gas include increased system complexity and cost as well as safety issues. Benefits include improved fuel economy and reduced engine maintenance costs. In conclusions, HHO gas shows potential as a renewable fuel but requires additional equipment for production and delivery into engines.

INTRODUCTION
• Fossil fuels are the primary source of energy for power plants,
automobiles etc. in today's world.
• Combustion in engines produces harmful gases such as carbon
dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, unburned
hydrocarbons etc.
• Some of the ill-effects of these pollutants are global warming,
• acid rain and various health issues.
• Several alternative fuels have been explored in the recent
times with the intent of reducing the dependence on fossil
fuels and achieving lower emissions.
• This topic presents the state of the art of HHO gas, which is a
renewable alternative fuel possessing several benefits over
fossil fuels.
HHO GAS

• HHO gas, which is obtained by the electrolysis of water, is a

promising alternative fuel.
• The mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas is nearly
stoichiometric proportions produced in the electrolyzer is
known as HHO gas.
• It is also called as brown’s gas, hydroxy or oxyhydrogen.
HOW HHO PRODUCED

• HHO gas contains two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen

molecule.
• The electricity breaks the bond between the hydrogen
molecules and the oxygen molecule from the water in the
electrolyzer.
• Hydrogen and oxygen are released as gases.
• Both gases are filtered and introduced into air intake of engine.
WHY HHO GAS

• HHO has 75% flammable character.

• HHO is the only fuel that doesn’t pollute.
• HHO will provide clean, sustainable energy to meet the
demands of future generations.
• HHO is endless renewable, never run out.
• It improves lean burn limits when combined with carbon fuels.
HOW DOES HHO WORKS

• An electrolyzer of the system is convert the water into HHO.

• The gas is then pulled into the engine through air induction
system of the automobile.
• The addition of HHO to air extends the flammability limit of
gasoline.
• The standard ratio of fuel is increased to 20:1 from 14:1.
• It will result in mileage improvements and decreased pollution.
PRODUCTION OF HHO GAS
• The production of HHO gas is obtained by electrolysis of a
dilute solution of electrolyte in water.
• This results in the formation of hydrogen and oxygen gases at
the cathode and anode.
• They are formed in stoichiometric proportions produced in the
electrolyzer.
• Two designs of the electrolytic cell were introduced.
• The first type had two plate electrodes immersed in a solution
of KOH in water.
• The second design comprised multiple electrodes, in effect
forming a number of cells in series.
• This required less electric current compared to first design.
PROPERTIES OF HHO GAS

• The properties of HHO gas as a fuel are similar to hydrogen.

• HHO is a colourless and odourless gas, whose ionisation
energy is around 13.6 ev.
• It has a liquid to expansion ratio of 1:848 under atmospheric
conditions.
• The flammability range is 4 – 75%.
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP FOR USING
HHO GAS IN ENGINES
EFFECT ON ENGINE PERFORMANCE
AND EMISSIONS
• The addition of HHO reduces the duration of combustion
owing to the highly flame speed of hydrogen.
• This reduces the heat losses.
• Combustion takes place nearly at constant volume close to
TDC, peak pressure, work output and thermal efficiency
increases.
• HHO gas along with air in the intake manifold of a gasoline
S.I engine and observed improvement in thermal efficiency.
Effect of HHO gas on brake thermal efficiency in S.I engine

Effect of percentage of HHO on brake thermal efficiency in C.I engine.

CHALLENGES

• System complexity.
• Cost.
• Safety.
• Efficiency of production.
BENEFITS OF HHO

• Improve fuel economy of 10 – 30%.

• Improve engine performance and drivability.
• Reduce engine maintenance costs.
• Works on all diesels, gasoline and biodiesel engines.
• Convert harmful exhaust gases into steam.
• HHO is the lightest element on the earth- fourteen times
lighter than air.
CONCLUSIONS

• HHO gas is used as promising renewable alternative fuel to

improve the engine performance and emissions, its use
requires additional equipment that is HHO generator as well as
increased current demand on the battery.
