Writing

an
ESSAY

Is derived from a latin

word ‘exagium’ which
roughly translates to
presenting one’s case.
Essay
 Is generally a short piece of writing outlining
the writer’s perspective or story.

 Can be both formal as well as informal.

 Formal essays are generally academic in

nature
and tackle serious topics.
TYPES OF AN ESSAY
 1. NARRATIVE ESSAYS:
This is when the writer is narrating an
incident or story through the essay. Means
you’re telling a story from a certain
viewpoint , and there is a reason for the
telling.

All narrative essays have characters, setting,

a climax, and most importantly a plot.
Famous narrative written
by John updike

 “The afternoon grew so glowering that in the sixth

inning the arc lights were turned on—always a wan
sight in the daytime, like the burning headlights of
a funeral procession. Aided by the gloom, fisher
was slicing through the Sox rookies, and Williams
did not come to bat in the seventh. He was second
up in the eight. This was almost certainly his last
time to come to the plate in Fenway Park, and
instead of merely cheering , as we had at his three
previous appearances, we stood, all of us, and
applauded.”

2. DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS:
 Here the writer will describe a place, an
object, an event or maybe even a memory.
 The writer must paint a picture through his

words.
 A Descriptive essay when done well will make

the reader feel the emotions the writer was

feeling at the moment.
Example of descriptive
essays
 “ Like his twisted feathers, his many scars, the
reliable old owl chose the gnarled, weather-
beaten, but solid branch often- it being a
companion to the wise alone with the night
and the last branch to creak in the heaviest
wind. He often came to survey the fields and
the clouds before his hunt, to listen to steady
sound of the stream passing through reeds
under the bridge, while combing his feathers
unwanteds – whatever they might be.”
3. EXPOSITORY ESSAYS
 In such an essay a writer presents a balanced
study of a topic, the writer must have real
and extensive knowledge about the subject.
 There is no scope for the writer’s feelings or

emotions in an expository essay.

 It is completely based on facts, statistics,

examples etc.
Example of expository essay from
thoughtful learning
 Did you know 7 out of 10 students have
cheated at least once in the past year? Did
you know that 50 percent of those students
have cheated more than twice? These
shocking statistics are from a survey of 9,000
U.S high school students. Incredibly, teachers
may even be encouraging their students to
cheat! Last year at a school in Detroit,
teachers allegedly provided their students
with answers to state-wide standard tests.”
PERSUASIVE ESSAYS
 The purpose of the essay is to get the reader
to your side of the argument.
 A persuasive essay is not just a presentation

of facts but an attempt to convince the reader

of the writer’s point of view.
 Both sides of the argument have to

presented in these essays. But the ultimate

aim is to persuade the readers that the
writer’s argument carries more weight.
Give your essays an interesting and a
appropriate title.

• Keep it between 300-500 words.

• Keep your language simple and crisp.

• Do not make grammar mistakes, use correct

punctuation and spellings.

• Before beginning the essay organize your

thoughts and plot rough draft.
