THE CHArTER ACT,1813
• The Charter Act of 1813 is rightly regarded as the
foundation stone of English Education System in India.
Education , which remained a neglected affair in the
early days of the East India Company, got a new hope
to develop and progress with the insertion of Article 43
in the Charter Act of 1813. It was decided that
“ a sum of not less than one lac of rupees in each year
shall be set apart and applied to the revision and
improvement of literature and the encouragement of
the learned natives of India----”
IMPORTANCE OF CHARTER
ACT OF 1813
1. Due to this Act, the British compelled to spend one lack rupees annually
for the development of learned natives of India.
2. First time deeply thought about the improvement of Indian education.
Before the Act no provision of grants were there.
3 Through this this Act, a national has arisen for the development of Indian
education and Indian people for the first time thought about the
importance of education.
4. The Charter Act also paved the way for Anglisist -Classicist Controversy
through which English language has spread all over the India.
5. Knowledge of science and technology education was developed through
the Act
6. It motivated the learned and qualified section of Indian people to work for
Indian education.
7. Before the introduction of the Act the Indian education system was
traditional and was imparted through the traditional institutions.
