Refractometer is a tool that measures the concentration of dissolved substances like sugar, salt, and protein in a solution based on its refractive index. It works by utilizing the principle of light refraction. There are two main types: hand refractometers and Abbe refractometers. The key parts include the daylight plate and prism. To operate it, the user cleans the plates, calibrates it using water, places a sample droplet, and views the measurement through the eyepiece. Proper maintenance includes cleaning the plates before and after use with water and storing the refractometer in its container away from direct sunlight.

General Explanation

Refractometer is a tool used to measure the

dissolved concentration / concentration based
on its refractive index. For example sugar,
salt, protein, etc.

The principle : to utilize light refraction.

Part of Refractometer
HOW TO OPERATE
1. Open the Day Light plate by
using the thumb.
2. Clean the Day light plate
and prism with aquades.
3. Then the wiping is done in
one direction and free.
4. If the refractometer is more
than three months unused,
bleaching (bleach 10%) is used
to clean the plates formed.
5. Then calibration is done
using aquades.
6. Drip aquades on the prism
and do not let bubbles. If there
is a bubble, it will affect the
value of ND so that
measurement not right.
7. Eyes see the measurements
of the eye piece until there is a
border between the blue and
white that shows the
measurement results.
8. After use it, clean the prism
and day light plate with
aquades.
9. Then wipe with one
direction.
10. Store back refractometer
in box (container).
HOW TO MAINTAIN
• Clean the prism and day light
plates with aquades and wipe with
tissues before and after use
• Refractometer placed on special
container.
• If the refractometer is immersed in
water, it is immediately engulfed with
air, then exposed to sunlight to avoid
dew formation on the surface of the
lens.
• Do not expose direct sunlight.
• Prisms are not scratched.
The Conclution

• Refractometer is used to determine the

refractive index of the liquid.
• Pure water (aquadest) is used to calibrate
Abbe refractometers. The refractive index of
pure water or aquadest at a temperature of
29oC of 1.3320 o corresponds with the
literature.
