Operations processes transform inputs like raw materials, labor, equipment and information into outputs like products and services. A process is defined as an arrangement of resources that produce a mixture of outputs and services. All operations comprise a set of interconnected processes that form departments and units. There are two main types of processes: continuous flow systems which aim to move a single unit through each step to specialized manufacture similar products, and intermittent flow systems where production is made to fulfill specific customer orders rather than for stock, with flexibility being the key characteristic.

 Basically, operations processes transform inputs to outputs. Inputs are things


like raw materials, labour, equipment, information, and money. Outputs are
products or services, as well as the level of customer satisfaction people
have after they've purchased from you.
 A process may be defined as an arrangement of resources that produce
some mixture of products and services
 All operation comprises a set of processes which connect with each other
to establish a network. Such process is called departments and units.

 A continuous flow process is a method of manufacturing that aims to move


a single unit in each step of a process, rather than treating units as batches
for each step.
 It creates specialized manufacturing of similar products.
 Let us take an example to make it more clear.

 In Intermittent manufacturing systems, the goods are manufactured


specially to fulfill orders made by customers rather than for stock.
 Here the flow of material is intermittent. Intermittent production systems are
those where the production facilities are flexible enough to handle a wide
variety of products and sizes.
 FLEXIBILITY is the key word to describe intermittent production process.
 Examples of intermittent systems are: machine shops, hospitals, general
office etc. where the basic nature of inputs keeps on changing with the
changing design of the product.
