To Study The Effect of Pre-Combustion Chamber in A Mercedes-Benz Automobile

The document summarizes the effect of a pre-combustion chamber in a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine. It notes that a pre-chamber assists in creating turbulence which ensures rapid mixing of air and fuel, allowing the flame front to propagate quickly throughout the combustion chamber for more efficient and complete burning of fuel. While it increases heat loss and emissions compared to direct injection, it allows for lower injector pressures. Visualizations show the pre-chamber flame jet maintaining excellent penetration and direction into the combustion chamber, resulting in closer to ideal combustion at higher efficiency and lower NOx emissions than an engine without a pre-chamber.

To study the effect of pre-combustion

chamber in a Mercedes-Benz automobile

Introduction :
• An indirect injection diesel engine delivers fuel into a
chamber off the combustion chamber, called a pre-
chamber where combustion begins and then
spreads into the main combustion chamber

• Assists in creating turbulence which ensures rapid

mixing of air-fuel mixture and allows the flame front
to propagate quickly in to the whole chamber thereby
resulting in more efficient and complete burning of
fuel and excellent power delivery.
• .

Disadvantages
Advantages:
Increase in heat loss to the engine's cooling system
• Fast combustion speed.
Grater emissions than direct-injection engines.
• Injector pressures can be lower, at about 100 bar( 1500
psi)

• Mechanical injection systems allowed high-speed running

Flame Front Propagation

The flame jet from the auxiliary chamber

maintained excellent penetration and was directed
at the wall of the combustion chamber at high
speed

Acting as the ignition source, the flame spread

over multiple zones rapidly combusted the lean
air-fuel mixture

Closer to ideal combustion at higher thermal

efficiency and lower NOx emissions than an engine
without the pre-chamber was obtained.
