Solid State Electronics: Course No: ECE 1109

This document discusses the topics of solid state physics, electronics, and solid state electronics. It provides definitions and explanations of these fields. Solid state physics deals with the properties of bulk solids, especially crystals. Electronics is the study and application of devices that control electron flows, like semiconductors. Solid state electronics refers to components based on semiconductors, such as integrated circuits, LEDs, and LCDs. The document also discusses the different types of solids based on conductivity and provides overviews of related areas.

Solid State Physics
Physics ?
Solid ?
The branch of physics that deals with the physical properties of
solid materials, especially the electromagnetic, thermodynamic,
and structural properties of crystalline solid.
 It study of the properties of bulk matter rather than those of the
individual particles that comprise it.
 It concerned with the properties exhibited by the atoms and
molecules because of their association and regular, periodic
arrangement in crystal.
 It explain the nature of aggregates of atom in terms of the basic laws
of the quantum theory and the well understood properties of
individual atoms.

Electronics

The branch of physics that treats of the emission, transmission,

behavior, and effects of electrons.
Or,
The study and application of devices that control the flow of
electrons, through semiconductor devices, gases, a vacuum, etc.
Or,
Field of science dealing with electronic devices such as diodes,
transistor, etc.

These are used ―

- to control electron flows which makes amplification of weak signals possible
- as switches which makes digital information processing possible.

Solid State Electronics
Solid state refers to electronic components, devices, and system based
entirely on the semiconductor. The expression was especially prevalent
in the late 1950s and early 1960s during the transition of vacuum tube
technology to the semiconductor diode and transistor.

Further examples of solid-state devices :

- integrated circuit (IC),
- light emitting diode (LED), and
- liquid crystal display (LCD) etc.

Example of non solid state components:

- cathode-ray tube (CRT).
In this device, electrons flow freely through a vacuum from an electron gun,
through deflecting and focusing fields, and finally to a phosphorescent
screen.
- Electromechanical devices,
- devices with moving parts like hard disk, etc.

Solids, Depending on Conductivity
The single most important electrical characteristic of solid is the
electrical conductivity. Depending on the electrical conductivity
there are three types of solids-

1. Metal: Is highly conductive solid and offer little resistance.

2. Insulators: Most solid nonmetal are insulators. They offer

virtually infinite resistance to electric current.

3. Semiconductor: The electrical conductivity of these types of

solid is neither very high or very low.
