Sludge Bricks New

This document presents information on sludge bricks. It discusses how sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, can be used to make bricks as a way to conserve natural resources and reduce pollution. The document outlines the concept, aims, methodology, materials used, applications, advantages and disadvantages of sludge bricks. It notes that sludge bricks can contain up to 30% sludge, are economical and eco-friendly, but have less tensile strength than traditional bricks. The presentation of this information is meant to explore the feasibility and benefits of utilizing sludge in brick production.

INTRODUCTION

 Sludge is a semi-solid slurry and can be produced as sewage sludge from wastewater
treatment processes .
 Sludge is semi-solid material that is produced as a by-product during sewage treatment of
industrial or municipal wastewater.
 brick is building material used to make walls, pavements and other elements in masonry
construction.
 A brick can be composed of clay-bearing soil, sand, and lime, or concrete materials.
CONCEPTS

 The concept of sludge brick is to make bricks with waste material like sludge.
 The sludge brick concept was first used in the year 1889.
 Thomas Shaw's invention covered the use of sludge as an addition to bricks, tiles, blocks
and other building materials.
 Port Elizabeth brickworks in South Africa has been making sludge bricks since 1979.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 Conservation of natural resources.

 To give better environment to the town.
 Economical design and light weight product.
 Reduce in construction cost.
 To examine the effect of dry sludge in brick properties.
 Reduce pollution .
NEEDS AND SCOPE

 To check the feasibility of sewage sludge as ingredient in brick making.

 Conservation of natural resources like clay.
 To make eco-friendly low cost and durable construction material.
 The dry sludge was dried at natural sun light.
 The dry sludge used to produce different type brick.
 The use of dry sludge in several types of concrete mixes was investigated.
METHODOLOGY

LITERATURE REVIEW
 Literature pertaining to utilization of dry sludge in brick will be reviewed from published papers in
journals, code practice and standard book to find out the research gap.

DATA COLLECTION
 Data will be collected pertaining to available methodologies and applications of dry sludge used in
the brick.

DATA ANALYSIS
 Based on the collected data analysis will be made to find out the most suitable methodology that
can be applied for replacement of dry sludge in brick as soil.
 It is required to study the compressive strength, water absorption, weight and other aspects as well as
economical as parts in detail inform the stakeholders for maximizing its use.
APPLICATION

 It is widely used In small construction like residential buildings.

 This is bricks is eco-friendly, strong and durable.
 The bricks can contain up to 30% sludge.
 Bricks formed using this method have adequate crushing strength, hardness and water
absorption.
 This bricks are mostly used in foreign countries.
MATERIAL USED

 SAND
 CLAY
 LIME
 FLY ASH
 WATER

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Economical  Time consuming construction
 Hard and durable  Cannot be used in high seismic zones
 Compressive strength is good enough for
ordinary construction  If more sludge material is used than brick
will lose its strength
 Due to sludge the cost of bricks becomes
cheap  Very Less tensile strength
 Highly fire resistant  Cleaning brick surfaces is a hard job
 Produces less environmental pollution during
manufacturing process
CONCLUSION

 Its plastic limit is a zero.

 Dry sludge is available free of cost so, we will reduce cost of brick. After doing the
practical we judge some properties are match with soil.
 In this project we have incorporated the use of Dry Sludge in brick up to 50% by replacing
soil. (Dry Sludge 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%)
