Problem Statement

• A petition was filed for Guardian Ad Litem to intervene due to the


mother being addicted to drugs and alcohol. She has also
neglected and physically assaulted John Doe throughout his
childhood.
Current Information

• Mothers life choices may have caused John to use marijuana and instigate fights between
others. The neglect, abuse, and substance abuse he saw as a child may play a role in his
actions today.
• What is the staff recommendation about diagnosis, interventions, and treatment?
• DSS and GAL recommend that John be moved to live with his father in New York.
• What does research say on their diagnosis/problem/treatment?
• Studies have shown that children who are exposed to drug use and neglect/abuse are more
likely to use drugs and be abusive as they grow into adults. It can cause emotional,
psychological, and physical effects on a child.

particular case.
