Essay •Is a short non-fiction, non-imaginary work about a subject. •It may be classified by tone and style (formal and informal). •Purposes depend on what the writer wants to write about. THREE MAIN PARTS (Essay) • Introduction • Body • Conclusion Introduction •Shows the topic sentence of the essay. •It should be effective so the readers are encouraged or motivated to continue reading. Ways to write an effective essay introduction: 1. Catch the reader’s attention (direct announcement, a quotation, a question, a definition, an unusual comparison, or a controversial position/opinion); 2. Introduce the topic of the essay; 3. Introduce the main idea; and 4. Introduce the purpose of the essay. Body •Includes body paragraph. •Develops the main idea of the essay. Characteristics of effective body paragraphs: 1. Explain, illustrate, or provide evidence to support the main idea of essay; 2. Discuss only one aspect of the main idea; 3. Work together with other body paragraphs to support your essay’s main idea; 4. Work together with other body paragraphs to create a clear, cohesive paper/essay. Conclusion •Brings the essay to a logical end. •It should be brief, predicting outcome to main idea, giving an opinion, and quotes. Characteristics of an effective conclusion: 1. Remind readers of the primary focus of the essay; 2. Avoid introducing new ideas; and 3. Avoid apologies. TYPES OF ESSAY • Formal Essay • Informal Essay Formal Essay •Also called “impersonal essay”. •The content is informative and scientific in nature. Informal Essay •Also called “familiar/personal essay”. •It expresses personal experiences or observation on human nature. •Purpose: entertain > inform. FORMS OF ESSAY • Descriptive • Narrative • Expository • Persuasive • Argumentative Descriptive Essay •An essay that illustrates by using sensory words in order to bring to the reader’s imagination what is being talked about. Narrative Essay •An essay that tells a story of the writer or other’s story. •Usually found in the feature writing sections of newspapers and magazines. Expository Essay •An essay that explains something so that reader can understand. Persuasive Essay •An essay that convinces the reader to think in a certain way. Argumentative Essay •An essay that shows assertion (opinion, theory, hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than the others’.
