Superhydrophobic Surfaces

This document discusses superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS), which exhibit high water repellency due to low surface energy and nano-scale surface roughness. SHS are found in nature on surfaces like lotus leaves and butterfly wings. The document covers the theory behind SHS, fabrication methods like sol-gel processing and etching, and applications such as self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and anti-biofouling. SHS show potential for use in coatings, fabrics, and other materials due to their stability and water-repellent properties.

INTRODUCTION

 SHS exhibits high water repellency

 Water repellency depends on two factors
- surface energy
- surface morphology
 SHS has water contact angle above 150°
 SHS has very low contact angle hysteresis
 Self cleaning effect
 SHS has nano scale roughness

THEORY OF SHS
 When a liquid drop is placed in contact with solid , the
equilibrium of liquid & solid surface will be established at a
certain angle called static contact angle , θ0 , given by Young
equation:
cos θ0 = γsA -γsL
γLA

FABRICATION OF
SUPERHYDROPHOBIC
SURFACE
(1). Sol- gel process
 Efficient, low cost , low temperature & low pressure process.
 Produces rough surface on variety of oxide such as silica,
alumina.
 Forms a flat surface coating, xerogel coating or aerogel
coating.

(2). Layer by layer self assembly
 Simple and cheap method.
 Producing thin film coating by depositing oppositely charged
layers.
 Sequential adsorption of positive or negative charged species
by alternative dipping into solution.
(3). Etching
 Another simple & efficient method.
 Increases the roughness of the surface.
 Different etching techniques are chemical, plasma & laser
etching.

(4). Galvanic deposition
 Cheap method to produce rough surface.
 Electrochemical method that involves galvanic reaction has
been used to fabricate super hydrophobic surfaces.
 Deposition occurs when metallic ions are in contact with metal
substrate of lower oxidation potential.

APPLICATIONS OF SHS
(1). Anti-adhesion and self cleaning
 Due to high water contact angle and low contact angle
hysteresis.
 Surfaces get contaminated easily and frequently.
 Practical application such as self cleaning window glasses.

(2). Anti- biofouling application
 Used in under water structures and ship.
 A hydrophobic rough surface that support an air film between
itself and water.
 Reduction of wetted area is minimized.

(3). Corrosion inhibition
 Preparing surface that repel water.
 Successful method to slow down the breakage of oxide layer
of metals.
 Further corrosion of metal is reduced.

CONCLUSION
 Superhydrophobicity leads to self cleaning and anti
corrosive surfaces.
 SHS shows significant stability over different solvents,
pH and temperature.
 SHS have wide engineering application in fabrics,
paints, roof tiles, glass..etc.
