Flyash Based Geopolymer Concrete

Under the guidance of Mr. G. Jebaraj, an experimental investigation was conducted to study the properties of geopolymer concrete. Geopolymer concrete is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cement concrete that does not use cement as a binder. It utilizes industrial byproducts like fly ash and activates them using an alkaline solution to form binding properties. The study examined the compressive strength, creep, drying shrinkage, and other properties of geopolymer concrete mixtures with different ratios of fly ash, alkaline activators, and curing conditions. Geopolymer concrete was found to provide high strength and durability while reducing carbon dioxide emissions compared to ordinary Portland cement concrete.

 Fly ash concrete is an eco-friendly construction material in
which fly ash replaces portland cement.
 Geopolymer concrete is an innovative ,eco-friendly
construction material.
 It is used as replacement of cement concrete.
 In geopolymer concrete cement is not used as a binding
material.
 Fly ash,silica-fume or GGBS,along with alkali solution are
used as binders.
 Geopolymer is a new development in the world of concrete
in which cement is totally replaced by pozzolanic materials
like fly ash and activated by highly alkaline solutions to act
as a binder in the concrete mix.
 For the selection of suitable ingredients of geopolymer
concrete to achieve desire strength at required workability,
an experimental investigation has been carried out for the
gradation of geopolymer.
 Alkaline solution used for present study is combination of
sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate(sio2).
 OPC is most consumed commodity in the world after water.
 It is also the most energy intensive material.
 Cement production leads to carbon-dioxide emission.
 1 t0n of CO2 is produced for every 1 ton of cement.
 Replacing some limestone with fly ash and blast furnace
slag called as blended cement.
 Geopolymer reduces the demand of OPC which leads O2
emission.
 Utilise waste materials from industries such as fly ash,silica-
fume,GGBS.
 Produce a more durable infrastructure
 Coarse aggregate
 Fine aggregate – sand or bottom ash can be used
 Admixture – superplasticizers(naphthalene based or
naphthalene sulphonate based)
 Alkaline activators
 Alkaline activation is a process of mixing powdery alumino
silicate with an alkaline activator
 It produce a paste which sets and hardens within short
duration
 A nominal cube is casted on m30 grade of concrete.
 Sodium silicate solution with Na2o – 16.37% SiO2 –
34.35% and H20 – 49.28% and sodium hydroxide solution
having 13M concentration were maintained.
 Water geopolymer binder ratio will be 0.35.
 Alkaline solution to fly-ash ratio is 0.35.
 The above mentioned ratio is for 150mm cubes.
 CREEP TEST
 DRYING SHRINKAGE TEST
 CMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST
 MODULUS OF ELASTICITY & POISSONS RATIO
 Pavements
 Retaining wall
 Watertanks
 Precast beam
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 High compressive strength  Difficult to create
 High tensile strength  Requires special handling
 Low creep  Geo-polymerisation
 Low drying shrinkage process is sensitive
 Highly durable
 Fire proof
 Geopolymer concrete is a promising construction material
due to its low carbon dioxide emission.
 The construction industry is in demand of eco friendly &
greener materials which are durable. As compared to the
existing concrete materials, fly ash is advantageous but its
uses as tested against strength & durability needs to be
confirmed. The present project work emphasized on the
research & development activity in construction materials
using fly ash with geo polymers.
