Mindfulness

The document discusses mindfulness and an experiment conducted by Ellen Langer. In the experiment, two groups of elderly men were taken to pretend they were in their youth in the 1950s. The group that was instructed to act as if they were in the past appeared younger afterwards and were more open. This provided evidence that the mind can influence aging and that being mindful in the present moment can impact health and well-being.

Mindfulness

BY: MORGAN WAITES

Ellen J. Langer
Professor of
psychology at Harvard
University.
Her most influential work
is Counter Clockwise ,
published in 2009.
She studies illusion of
control, decision-making,
aging, and mindfulness
theory.
Mindfulness is the psychological
process of bringing one's attention
to experiences occurring in the
present moment.

What is
mindfulness Mindfulness has helped reduce
stress, depression, and anxiety.
?

Mindfulness is a practice that

directly
addresses cognitive context.
The 1st Step

Ellen Langer and her colleagues piled two groups of men in their seventies
and eighties into vans, and drove them two hours north.

The group who went first stayed for one week and were asked to
pretend they were young men, once again living in the 1950s.

The second group, who arrived the week after, were told to stay in
the present and simply reminisce.
The groups were surrounded by 1950s items
and they discussed events of the time

One night the men sat, glued listening to the

radio. The 1st
Group

For the first group, it was a race being run for

the first time.
 Onenight the men sat,
glued listening to the radio.
 For
the second group it
brought back a flood of
memories.
The 2nd group
 They improved in memory
recall even though they
were removed from their
daily routines
The outcome
 At the end of the retreat, each
group showed improvement in
several areas.
 In both groups, the
experimental group stood who
“acted as if” they were in 1959
actually appeared to be
younger.
 They were more open and
aware of their surrounding.
The Impact

o This made an impact because it showed that “mind has

enormous control over the body”
o His study led to the groundbreaking concept that
perhaps our thoughts can actually affect the aging
process.
o If we think young we can be young.
The Analysis

o We could possibly always be doing before

we think.
o Mindfulness helps promote happiness.
o Mindfulness supports many of the 7 habits of
happiness.
