The two different approaches to the search and understanding of truth; a. Western modern thinking • “ Only the mind, not the body can arrive at clear and distinct ideas which cannot be doubted.” ( RENE DESCARTES – (1596 -1650) • Rene was the first philosopher to study the process of thinking itself. ( Epistemology) * It is a method of searching for truth that leads to a detachment from the material world outside of one’s mind and a focus on the inner world of consciousness and thinking. • Study the process of thinking itself. Example. In 19th century, Europe lived under political repression, thus the masses were longing for a change. • Social reformation,economic improvements. • Industrial Revolution – inventions of new machines • Brought on the absence of social conscience. • The main philosophical problem that became prevalent during that period was the grounding of the human value. REDISCOVERY OF HUMAN DIGNITY • REDISCOVERY OF HUMAN DIGNITY focused itself on the human person, philosophers tried to reflect o the mystery of human existence. • Rene was the first philosopher to study the process of thinking itself. ( Epistemology) Whereas earlier philosophers sought knowledge about the good life, nature, the soul, God, ideal society and so forth. • Ancient Philosophy chiefly theological. The Middle Ages turn from the study of cosmos,nature, human person, and existence of God( Socrates,Plato and Aristotle)
