Revolution

This document summarizes the Copernican Revolution. It explains that early thinkers believed the Earth was at the center of the universe (geocentric model). Nicolaus Copernicus challenged this view in the 16th century by proposing a heliocentric model where the Sun, not Earth, was at the center. Though initially rejected, Copernicus' model was eventually accepted as it better explained planetary motions and addressed issues with the geocentric view, launching the scientific revolution and transformation of societal beliefs.

planets are.
Greek Philosophers and Intellectuals

• Wrote about planets to explain the

movements of heavenly bodies and their
effects in the world.

• Planets moved around in circular motions-

(days and night).
Claudius Ptolemy (Astronomer and Philosopher)

• Planet, sun and moon moved in circular

motion around the Earth.

• Sun and moon’s revolution explained the

existence of days and nights.

• Earth was at the center- (Geocentrism)

Geocentric Model
Nicolaus Copernicus- 16th century
(Mathematician and astronomer)

• Challenge the Ptolemaic model

• Heliocentrism
– Center of the Solar System was not Earth but Sun.
– Idea was rejected at first in the public.
– Appalled many since religious belief had taught
them Earth was created first before all other things.
– Persecuted as Heretic.
• After some time, some astronomers
realized that his model simplified the
orbits of planets.

• Answered issues that could not be

explained using Geocentric Model.

• Works supported this model emerge as

well.
• It was eventually accepted by people in a
period which was called the Birth of
modern astronomy.

• This era began what was known as

scientific revolution which resulted in the
transformation of society’s thoughts and
beliefs.
Darwinian Revolution
(Charles Darwin- English Naturalist, biologist, geologist)
• One of the controversial intellectual revolution
• On the Origin of the Species
