Unit Lecture

Mr. Mendoza's art lecture covered the elements of art, principles of design, and three historical art periods - Baroque, Neoclassicism, and Impressionism. Students learned key characteristics of each period and influential artists. They discussed their favorite period and potential art styles with partners. For an assignment, students will write a 2-page essay about one of the periods, explaining when and where it began, influential artists, common subject matter, and their reasons for choosing that topic. They used the remaining class time to brainstorm essay ideas.

throughout the majority of Europe during the 17th
and 18th centuries. In informal usage, the
word baroque describes something that is
elaborate and highly detailed.

dramatic, intending to appeal above all to the senses
and the emotions. The Massacre of the
Innocents, 1784 by Peter
Paul Rubens
z
Neoclassicism
 Neoclassicism Neoclassicism refers to
movements in the arts that draw inspiration
from the “classical” art and culture of ancient
Greece and Rome

Characteristics:

The characteristics of Neoclassical art include

a concentration on Greek and Roman mythology
and history for subjects, a prioritization Oath of the Horatii,

Claude Monet
essence of the subject, rather than its details.
z
Now You Try!!!!
 Take 2 minutes and discuss with your neighbor:

1. What is the period you like the most? And why?

- Write your neighbors response on your guided notes section

2. If you were an artist, what art period/movement will you most likely be part of?
z
Let’s Hear what you learned
 I will ask questions from the unit lecture and I will give extra credit
points to the correct answers.
z
Its your turn!!!!

 Now that you know the Elements of art and Principles of

design, you need to create a project by writing 4 elements
of art and 4 principles of design and their definition
including an example of each.
z Here is an Example
z
Essay
 You will now select one of the 3 Art periods to write a 2 page essay
on.

 On the essay I want you to state when and where the period began,
who were the most influential artists in the time period, and what
type of subject matter we frequently see in the art period. (feel free
to find resources on the web and be sure to include a separate
page of citations)

 I also want you to explain why you chose to write about the art
period you selected.

 Use a bubble map to write down your ideas.

z
Now you try

 Before class ends, make good use of the

time remaining and start brainstorming your
possible topic and ideas for your essay on
the back of your guided notes.

 You may exchange ideas with your

neighbors for your topic.

 If you don’t finish, make sure you have your

topics ready by our next class.
