Choir Management

The document provides guidance for choir management in a parish setting. It recommends that choirs have weekly music practice, develop an arranged repertoire before masses, and prioritize learning melodies over complex harmonies if time is limited. It also suggests choirs adopt formal attire as servers do and have mandatory monthly meetings run by a central music ministry coordinator. The coordinator should update member directories, set ministry rules, and plan elections. Musical, liturgical, and pastoral formation is important for choir members' spiritual benefit.

CHOIR MANAGEMENT

Seminar 201
FURTHER ADVICE
Each choir must have
music practice every
week and must come up
with an “arranged
repertoire” before the
start of their scheduled
Mass
FURTHER ADVICE
Iftime is limited for
music practice,
PRIORITIZE familiarizing
the “melody” of the song,
rather than stressing
much on “multivocal
practice” (e.g. 4 voices)
FURTHER ADVICE
Since the choir is of the same
liturgical dignity as of the other
servers at Mass
(lectors/EMHC/altar servers), it
is strongly recommended that
every choir must have a
standard FORMAL ATTIRE
for their respective
liturgical services
Central Management (for
Officers, with Approval of Parish
Priest)
 Mandatory meeting at least once a month
 Regular updating of Directory of Music Ministry
(all choirs, officers, individual members)
 Have a set of rules/policies/guidelines for the
Parish Music Ministry (i.e. by-laws with vision-
mission) as per approval of Parish Priest
 Election of Officers on an annual basis (or as
decided by the MM Coordinator upon
prerogative of the Parish Priest)
 Monthly Contribution to Music Ministry/PPC Fund
 Plan of action for erring, inactive, complacent,
offensive choirs or members
In Terms of PPC and
Diocese/Parish
Attendance and compliance
to all liturgical music seminars
/ formation series for choirs as
provided by the DIOCESE

The Music Ministry must

attend/support/comply
with all PPC meetings and all
parish events and
endeavors/plans
Before Start of Mass
Come at least 10 minutes before the start
of the mass and properly groomed
Have time for vocal warm-up IF POSSIBLE
Check the sound system and the
instruments, but avoid creating
distraction
IF THERE ARE NEW SONGS TO BE
INTRODUCED, it is suggested to practice
them with the people (as ample time may
be available before the start of the Mass).
Choirs are encouraged to sing repetitiously
the new songs for at least two months for
the sake of familiarization by the assembly
During the Mass
Observe basic decorum
Once the priest chants, be
prepared to respond by chanting
If entrance / offertory /
communion hymn is finished but
the rite is not yet done, GIVE
SPACE for instrumental music
(except for Advent and Lent)

Besides musical formation,
suitable liturgical and spiritual
formation must also be given to
the members of the choir, in such
a way that the proper
performance of their liturgical
role … will bring spiritual benefit
to the choir-members
themselves.
