Kissing the cheek is a very common form of greeting in Southern Europe and
Latin America. Sometimes both cheeks are kissed; sometimes only one cheek is
touched lightly by the lips.
In Southeast Asia and any other country influenced by Muslim or Hindu culture,
cheek kissing — especially a woman — is offensive and must be avoided.
Most Arabian men only touch other men — not women — when they greet each
other or hold hands
Developmental Model of Intercultural
Sensitivity
Six stages how people experience cultural
differences:
1. Denial- the individual does not recognize
cultural differences
2. Defense- the individual starts to recognize
cultural differences and is intimidated by
them, resulting in either a superior view on
own culture or an unjustified high regard for
the new one
3. Minimization- although individuals see cultural
differences, they bank more on the universality of
ideas rather than on cultural differences
4. Acceptance- the individual begins to appreciate
important cultural differences in behaviors and
eventually in values
5. Adaptation- the individual is very open to world
views when accepting new perspective
6. Integration- individuals start to go beyond their
own cultures and see themselves and their actions
based on multifarious cultural viewpoints
