Week 1 History of Technology

The document discusses the evolution of information and communication technology (ICT) through four periods: 1) Premechanical Period - Earliest forms of communication including pictograms and the abacus dating back to 3000 BCE. 2) Mechanical Period - Spanned 1450-1840 and saw the development of early calculating machines like the Pascaline. 3) Electromechanical Period - Ran from 1840-1940 and introduced electricity for communication over long distances using devices like the telegraph and telephone. 4) Electronic Period - Began in 1940 and continues today, highlighted by the development of transistors, integrated circuits, and computers transitioning from vacuum tubes to solid state.

 Premechanical Period
 Mechanical Period
 Electromechanical Period
 Electronic Period
Premechanical Period
-premechanical period can be
traced back thousands of years
ago, around 3000 BCE to 1450
CE. During this time, humans
started communicating with
one another using words and
pictograms curved in rocks.
A Sumerian Pictogram dating back 3100
BCE. Shows the earliest form of
communication among humans.
Abacus, considered to be the first counting device, was
introduced in the 2nd century BCE. Evidence suggest that
the romans might have introduced the abacus to china, as
trade relations have existed between the romans and the
Chinese through the silk road.
The Mechanical Period
-the period served as the bridge
between our current period and the
premechanical period. This period
started around 1450-1840. During
this time, the interest in automating
and speeding up numerical
calculations grew. The machines
driven by mechanical means such
as steam and gears dominated
information processing and
calculations.
Pascaline, also called Arithmetic Machine, the first calculator or
adding machine to be produced in any quantity and actually
used. The Pascaline was designed and built by the French
mathematician-philosopher Blaise Pascal between 1642 and
1644
Example

First analytic engine invented

by Charles Babbage in 1837,
contained features such as the
arithmetic logic unit, control
flow, and integrated memory.
This feature would then
become part of the blueprint in
the creation of succeeding
computers, especially during
the first half of 20th century.
Electromechanical Period
-the electromechanical period
ushered in a new age in
communications and information.
This period started around 1840-
1940. In this period, the use of
electricity for information with one
another in a faster yet reliable
manner over long distances
aroused.
This US version of the commercial telegraph enables the use of
the morse code. The telegraph is considered the first device to
use electricity to transmit information over an electrical media.
First invented in 1837, invented by William Cooke and Sir
Charles Wheatstone.
The first commercial telephone
was made by Alexander
Graham bell in 1876.
Electronic Period
-the last period in ICT history is
electronic period. It started in the
1940s and continues to the present.
The highlight of this period is
focused on the advent of solid
stated devices or electronic .

devices. Four main events found in

this period are the late vacuum
tubes period, the transistor
period, the Integrated circuits
period, and the computer
processor period.
Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)
-the first electronic and general purpose computer, marked a revolutionary
period in computing. ENIAC was a big machine that occupied an area of 167
square meters. Aside from its big size, the processing speed was slower
than those machines today
Transistors Vacuum Tube

In 1947, the transistor was invented. It is an electronic device with properties and functions
similar to vacuum tubes, but it is lightweight and faster. The transistor is the foundation of every
electronic device today. In fact you can find a transistor for every electronic device. The first full
transistor computer was developed in 1957 and was faster than the vacuum computer.

Vacuum tube
-an electron tube contain a near-vacuum that allows the free passage of electric current.
An American electrical engineer named Jack Kilby was credited for
introducing the integrated circuit (IC) in 1958. The integrated circuit (IC) is
a device that is composed of a group of transistors and circuit elements
compressed in a single package. ICs are used in processing devices, and
processors to deliver user applications. From this time up to today,
computers are evolving from basic textual interfaces to graphical user
interfaces or GUI.
The very first unit which had set the standards for several PC
platforms today, was introduced in august 1981 and was
developed by IBM entry system division team led by Don
Estridge.
