HISTORY

Unique identification project was initially


conceived by the Planning Commission.
The concept of a unique identification was first
discussed and worked upon since 2006.
“Unique ID for BPL families” was given on 03-03-
2006 by the DIT.
At the same time, the Registrar General of India
was engaged in the creation of the National
Population Registrar and issuance of Multi-purpose
National Identity Cards to citizens of India.

Therefore, it was decided, with the approval of the


Prime Minister, EGoM to collate the two schemes.
The EGoM was constituted on 4th December, 2006.
After 4 meetings of EGoM members, on 4th
November, 2008 UIDIA came into existence.
Initially the UIDAI may be notified as an executive
authority.
Later on UIDIA became independent project

and attached with planning commission of india.

INTRODUCTION
UIDAI is an agency of the Government of India
responsible for implementing the envisioned
Multipurpose National Identity Card.
It was established in February 2009, and will own
and operate the Unique Identification Number
database
The authority will aim at providing a unique number
to all Indians, but not smart cards.
The authority would provide a database of residents
containing very simple data in biometrics.

The unique identification number(UID) will


only provide identity.
A pro-poor approach.
Enrollment of residents with proper
verification.
A partnership model.
Enrollment will not be mandated

Purpose

The purpose of UIDAI is to issue unique


identification number to all Indian
residents. That is:-
Robust enough to eliminate duplicate and
fake identities.
Can be verified and authenticated in an
easy and cost effective way.

Giving identity to 1.33 billion souls.


A national registry to food subsidy improve,
delivery of social services and for financial
inclusion.
Right to privacy.
