Charlie first took to the stage when, aged five, he performed in Music Hall in 1894, standing in for his
mother. As a child, he was confined to a bed for weeks due to a serious illness, and, at night, his mother
would sit at the window and act out what was going on outside. In 1900, aged 11, his brother helped get
him the role of a comic cat in the pantomime Cinderella at the London Hippodrome. In 1903 he appeared in
'Jim, A Romance of Cockayne', followed by his first regular job, as the newspaper boy Billy in Sherlock
Holmes, a part he played into 1906. This was followed by Casey's 'Court Circus' variety show, and, the
following year, he became a clown in Fred Karno's 'Fun Factory' slapstick comedy company.
According to immigration records, he arrived in the United States with the Karno troupe on October 2, 1912.
In the Karno Company was Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would later become known as Stan Laurel. Chaplin
and Laurel shared a room in a boarding house. Stan Laurel returned to England but Chaplin remained in the
United States. Chaplin's act was seen by film producer Mack Sennett, who hired him for his studio, the
Keystone Film Company.

Exercise 47
A nagging wife paid off big-time for a New Jersey man, who won $100,000 a year for life in the lottery
thanks to his insistent spouse. Jeweler Rasen Patel was dead-set against going to work in Manhattan on
March 5 because of bad weather. But his wife, Hina, insisted he go - and he picked up a New York State
Lottery instant ticket on his way in. A few scratches of a coin later, and Rasen Patel was screaming with joy.
Forecasters had predicted a big blizzard for that day, but the snowfall was light. And that prompted Hina
Patel, an accountant, to push her husband to make his usual commute from their home in Edison into the
city. "I wasn't going to go," he laughed, as he and his wife picked up their first $100,000 check at a New
York Lottery office on Long Island. "I made him go because he was supposed to collect money owed to
him," she said.
Rasen Patel bought a "Set for Life" instant lottery ticket in Penn Station on a whim and ended up never
making it to work that day. Holding his winning ticket, he phoned home and told his wife, "I'm a rich guy!"
"I said, 'What are you talking about?' I didn't believe him until he got home and showed me," Hina Patel
said. "I am still in shock and can't believe we won. We can now pay for our children's colleges, and we also
plan to help people who aren't as fortunate." The couple has two kids, ages 15 and 10.
They'll keep collecting as long as they live - and the lottery will pay up to $2 million to their estate in the
case of their early deaths. Two other lottery winners also accepted their prizes at the same press
conference.
Victoria Ragone of Port Jefferson claimed a check for $4.5 million - her take-home pay, before taxes, of a
$9 million Lotto win. "I still can't believe it - I never win anything," beamed Ragone, a single medical-billing
worker.
She said she wasn't going to go wild with her new fortune at first, but then changed her mind. "I am going
to do something crazy but I don't know what it is . . . maybe a little nip and tuck later," she laughed.
1. Rasen didn't want to go to work on March 5th. a. True b. False
5. They will collect the rest of their money next year. a. True b. False

If you can read a clock, you can know the time of day. But no one knows what time itself is. We
cannot see it. We cannot touch it. We cannot hear it. We know it only by the way we mark its
passing. For all our success in measuring the smallest parts of time, time remains one of the
great mysteries of the universe. One way to think about time is to imagine a world without
time. There could be no movement, because time and movement cannot be separated. A world
without time could exist only as long as there were no changes. For time and change are linked.
We know that time has passed when something changes.
In the real world, the world with time, changes never stop. Some changes happen only once in
a while, like an eclipse of the moon. Others happen repeatedly, like the rising and setting of the
sun. Humans always have noted natural events that repeat themselves. When people began to
count such events, they began to measure time. In early human history, the only changes that
seemed to repeat themselves evenly were the movements of objects in the sky. The most easily
seen result of these movements was the difference between light and darkness.
The sun rises in the eastern sky, producing light. It moves across the sky and sinks in the west,
causing darkness. The appearance and disappearance of the sun was even and unfailing. The
periods of light and darkness it created were the first accepted periods of time. We have
named each period of light and darkness: one day.
People saw the sun rise higher in the sky during the summer than in winter. They counted the
days that passed from the sun's highest position until it returned to that position. They counted
three hundred and sixty-five days. We now know that is the time Earth takes to move once
around the sun. We call this period of time a year.
Early humans also noted changes in the moon. As it moved across the night sky, they must have
wondered: Why did it look different every night? Why did it disappear? Where did it go? Even
before they learned the answers to these questions, they developed a way to use the changing
faces of the moon to tell time. The moon was "full" when its face was bright and round and
"new" when it was almost entirely dark. The early humans counted the number of times the
sun appeared between full moons. They learned that this number always remained the same,
about twenty-nine suns. Twenty-nine suns equalled one moon. We now know this period of
time as one month.
Early humans hunted animals and gathered wild plants. They moved in groups or tribes from
place to place in search of food. Then, people learned to plant seeds and grow crops. They
learned to use animals to help them work, and for food. They found they no longer needed to
move from one place to another to survive. As hunters, people did not need a way to measure
time. As farmers, however, they had to plant crops in time to harvest them before winter. They
had to know when the seasons would change. So, they were forced to developed calendars. No
one knows when the first calendar was developed. But it seems possible that it was based on
moons, or lunar months.
When people started farming, the wise men of the tribes became very important. They studied
the sky. They gathered enough information so they could know when the seasons would
change. They announced when it was time to plant crops.

Lead poisoning in children is a major health concern. Both low and
high doses of lead often suffer permanent nerve damage, mental
retardation, blindness and even death. Low doses of lead can lead to
mild mental retardation, short attention spans, distractibility, poor
academic performance, and behavioral problems.
This is not a new concern. As early as 1904, lead poisoning in children
was linked to lead-based paint. Microscopic lead particles from paint
are absorbed into the bloodstream when the children ingest flakes of
chipped paint, plaster or paint dust from sanding. Lead can also enter
the body through household dust, nail biting, thumb sucking, or
chewing on toys and other objects painted with lead-based paint.
Although American paint companies nowadays must comply with
strict regulations regarding the amount of lead used in their paint,
this source of lead poisoning is still the most common and most
dangerous. Children living in older, dilapidated houses are
particularly at risk.

It is easy for adult students of English to improve their pronunciation. Unlike children,
adults often find it hard to change the way they speak. This is why adult students have more
difficulties in pronunciation than youngsters.
There are several things that international students of English can do to improve their
pronunciation and to learn English well. They can join an English pronunciation class or
practice speaking English and listening to native speakers as much as possible. Watching TV
programs in English is also a good way of improving their pronunciation. The best way to
improve their pronunciation is to learn English in an English speaking country where they

A tsunami is a series of huge waves that can cause great devastation and loss of life
when they strike a coast. Tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake,
a volcanic eruption or a sub-marine rockslide. Most tsunamis are caused by
underwater earthquakes, but not all underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis - an
earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the Richter scale for it to cause a
tsunami. About 90 percent of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean. Many tsunamis
could be found before they hit land, and the loss of life could be minimized, with the
use of modern technology, computerized offshore buoys that can measure changes in
wave height, and a system of sounds on the beach to alert people of potential
tsunami danger.
