Dance can fulfill many needs such as recreation, entertainment, therapy, and religion. It differs from other activities in focusing on an aesthetic or entertaining experience. Throughout history, people have danced for four main reasons: to please gods, others, themselves through self-expression, and to build community. Dance provides physical, mental/emotional, social, and cultural benefits such as improving coordination, reducing stress, encouraging social interaction, and promoting cultural values.

INTRODUCTION TO

DANCE
“Dance is an activity which can take
many forms and fill many different
needs. It can be recreation,
entertainment, therapy, and
religion.

- Barbara Mettler, 1980

WHAT IS DANCE?
Dance differs from athletics or other daily activities
