Weathering Grade 11 Lesson

The document discusses a challenge-based activity to test students' knowledge from the last meeting by having them list terms learned and guess pictures shown. It provides instructions for two challenges - listing terms from the last meeting in one minute, and guessing pictures shown in one minute. Groups that do not complete the challenges will be eliminated.

Questions
 Can you name any natural cause or process
that could possibly break the rock into smaller
pieces?"
 “If the early Earth’s crust was mainly
composed of rocks, why do we have layers of
soil on the surface now? How do these soils
formed?
 Where these soils did came from?
What do you think are the possible reasons that
contributed to the present state of the headstone

about Weathering. Factors that affect Weathering Weathering
Weathering is the breaking down
of rocks and other materials on
the earth’s surface
Weathering – the physical & chemical breakdown of rocks.

Atmosphere (gas) Involving an interaction

Lithosphere (solid) between the 3 spheres
of the earth.
Hydrosphere (liq.)
Weathering – the physical & chemical
breakdown of rocks.
I. Physical Weathering
- rocks break into pieces
- changing size and shape
- but not their composition.
2) Chemical weathering
The altering of the composition of
minerals within a rock that results in a
reduction in size.

Agents of chemical weathering include:

 Water: Dissolves out of rocks

minerals making them
weaker

QUESTIONS:
a. In which setup did the reaction occur most
rapidly?
In which setup did it occur most slowly?
b. What is the relationship between particle size and
speed it takes for the tablet to dissolve?
How does this relationship apply to weathering in
nature?
c. In the activity you have just finished, how does
mechanical weathering contribute to chemical
weathering? d. Compare dissolution times in room
temperature water and hot water. What is the
relationship between temperature and weathering
rate?
Factors that affect the type, extent, and rate at
which weathering takes place:
a. Climate
• areas that are cold and dry tend to have slow rates
of chemical weathering and weathering is mostly
physical;
• chemical weathering is most active in areas with
high temperature and rainfall
b. Particle size
• Those that are most stable to surface conditions will
be the most resistant to weathering.
• Thus, olivine for example which crystallizes at high
temperature conditions will weather first than
quartz which crystallizes at low temperature.
c. Rock structure- rate of weathering is
affected by the presence of joints, folds, faults,
bedding planes through which agents of
weathering enter a rock mass.
Highly-jointed/fractured rocks disintegrate
faster than a solid mass of rock of the same
dimension
d. Topography- weathering occurs more
quickly on a steep slope than on a gentle one
e. Time- length of exposure to agents of
weather determines the degree of weathering
of a rock
III. FACTORS AFFECTING The Rates of WEATHERING.
1. Climate Differences

Arid Climates are very dry and the rate of weathering is slow.

Humid Climates are moist and the rate of weathering is fairly fast.

 Usually in the presence of heat weathering rates will also increase.

 Different climates and temperatures produce more favorable
forms of weathering.
Arid and Humid Climates cause different rates of weathering.
ex, Cleopatra's Obelisk

Egypt New York

In the mountains and at the
poles physical weathering like
frost action and abrasion are
more likely.
2.Particle Size and Shape as particle size decreases the
weathering rate increases

- When The Surface Area Increase

- More Sides Are Able To React
With The Elements
o Topography: the position of therock

o Air pollution

o Exposure time

o Surface area exposed

SCAVENGER HUNT ACTIVITY
1. Look for evidence of physical and chemical
weathering and identify the factors that affect
its appearance on campus.
2.Students will be given a copy of
the Scavenger Hunt Checklist to record
observations through drawings or written
descriptions.
3.Each group should record a minimum of
two examples of each type of weathering.
Students will complete the "L"
portion of their KWL at this
time.
L-What have you learned about the
Factors affect the rate of
weathering.
Students will share what they have
learned in a class discussion.
