Air Pollution Incidents

The document summarizes several major air pollution incidents: 1. The 1952 London smog killed over 4,000 people and affected more than 100,000 due to coal burning. 2. The 1973 Los Angeles smog saw high oxidant and ozone levels causing reduced visibility and respiratory issues. 3. The 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in India killed over 3,000 people within 6 hours when a chemical plant leaked methyl isocyanate gas. 4. The 1991 Kuwait oil fires caused by Iraq setting fire to oil wells released 6 million barrels of oil per day, polluting the air and soil. 5. Yokkaichi asthma in Japan in the 1960s and

AIR POLLUTION

INCIDENTS
What happened?

The great London smog:

The primary pollutant was Sulphur dioxide, with families gathering around coal-burning fires each
evening, and with coal-burning power stations by the river in the heart of the city.
Died: 4000
More than 100000 were affected

Los Angles smog:

Average of 63pphm oxidants were observed
Ozon concertation was high.
Broun Haze over the town was observed for 3 days.

Bhopal gas tragedy:

Union carbide plant released massive amount of methyl isocyanate into the air. Since this gas is denser
then air, it spread around the whole communities.. Over 3000 people were killed in 6 hours of leakage.
Kuwait oil fires:
Caused by Iraqi military forces setting fir to 700 oil wells during gulf war 1991.
Around 6 million barrels oil lost each day.
The byproducts of the petroleum burn caused pollution to the soil and air, known as Gulf
war syndrome.

Yokkaichi asthma:
Due to burning of petroleum and other fuels.
Causing chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma in people.

The 1997 Southeast Asian Haze:

This was a large-scale air quality disaster that occurred during the second half of 1997, its
after-effects causing widespread atmospheric visibility and health problems within south
Asia.
Caused asthma and respiratory infection.

Why it happened?

The great London smog:

Low grade coal use smoke from vehicle exhaust

Los Angles smog:

Vehicular emission is mainly responsible.
Presence of nitrogen oxides in air from combustion of fuel.
Loss of visibility and respiratory problems were common.

Bhopal gas tragedy:

It happened because of leakage excessive amount of methyl isocyanate(4000Kg) gas.
The gases were blown away by winds over Bhopal.
Kuwait oil fires:
Mixture of desert sand + Unignited oil + soot formed layers of “ Tarcrete” which covers
nearly 5% of the country.

Yokkaichi asthma:
Burning of petroleum resulted in release of Sulphur dioxide.

The 1997 Southeast Asian Haze:

Caused mainly by slash and burn technique adopted by formers in Indonesia.
The smoke haze episode has added to the urban and industrial air pollution
in south Asia, causing it to reach alarming levels in many metropolitan areas.
