VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

When messages or information are exchanged or


communicated through words, it is called verbal
communication. Verbal communication may be of two
types: written and oral communication.Verbal
communication takes place through face-to-face
conversations, group discussions, counseling, interview,
radio, television, calls, memos, letters, reports, notes, e-
mail, etc.
VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

 Nonverbal communication is a powerful arsenal in the face-


to-face communication encounters, expressed consciously in
the presence of others and perceived either consciously or
unconsciously. Much of nonverbal communication is
unintentional; people are not even aware that they are sending
messages. Nonverbal communication takes place through
gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, physical proximity,
touching etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

 No use of words
 Culturally determined
 Different meaning
 Vague and imprecise
 May conflict with verbal message
 Largely unconscious
 Shows feelings and attitudes
 Informality
KINDS OF PARALANGUAGE

PITCH How high or low you speak


VOLUME How loudly or softly you speak
TONE How harshly or gently you speak
ARTICULATION How clearly you pronounce your words
SPEED How fast or slowly you speak
STRESS PATTERNS Which words you make important
VOCAL QUALITY What makes you sound like you
KINDS OF PARALANGUAGE

RHYTHM How smooth or jerky you speak


ROAD BLOCKS Unneeded words, phrases or sounds you add
PAUSES Breaks you take between words and phrases
BODY LANGUAGE Using your body as you talk
FACIAL EXPRESSION Uisng your face as you talk
ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION
Kinesics body motions (blushes, shrugs, eye movement, foot-tapping, drumming
fingers)

Proxemics spatial separation (in relation both the social and physical
environment)

Haptics touch
Oculesics eye contact
Chronemics use of time, waiting, pausing

Olfactics smell
Vocalics tone of voice, timbre, volume, speed
