Food Availability
According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), food
security means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient
food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. (Peace Corps)
The global food security challenge is straightforward: by 2050, the world must feed 9
billion people. The demand for food will be 60% greater than it is today. (Breene, 2016)
A family is food secure when its members do not live in hunger or fear of hunger.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines three main aspects of food security. The
first is food availability, having a sufficient supply of food available on a consistent
basis.
The second aspect of food security is food access, having sufficient resources to obtain
appropriate foods for a nutritious diet.
The final aspect of food security is known as food utilization, or consuming a
nutritious diet. (Peace Corps)
In parts of our cities, residents have embraced suburban agriculture as a way
to improve access to healthier and more sustainably produced food. (Kent, 2017)
Despite these benefits, regulations, as well as some cultural opposition, continue to
constrain suburban agriculture. We can’t grow and market food wherever we like, even
if it is the sustainable production of relatively healthy options. (Kent, 2017)
While good planning will be key to a healthier, more sustainable food system,
planning’s role in allocating land for different uses across the city also constrains
suburban agriculture. (Kent, 2017)
Lengthy transportation, produce spoilage and middlemen raise the price of perishable
fruits and vegetables. High retail prices for items such as lettuces, tomatoes and
cucumbers discourage many low-income communities from buying, and supermarkets
from stocking, these items. (Gould & Caplow, 2012)
What factors
The result of food insecurity for a significant number of D.C. households: 13 percent
have reported being food insecure; 19 percent have experienced food hardship; and
37 percent of households with children have been unable to get enough food. Among
the damaging effects of food insecurity on children are impaired cognitive
development, reduced school readiness, lower educational attainments, and slower
physical, mental, and social development. (O'Hara, 2019)
Agriculture accounts for 18% of the economy’s output and 47% of its workforce. India is
the second biggest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Yet according to the
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, some 194 million
Indians are undernourished, the largest number of hungry people in any single
country. An estimated 15.2% of the population of India are too malnourished to lead a
normal life. A third of the world’s malnourished children live in India. (Breene, 2016)
Sustainable food security at household level is one of the emerging issues for all nation
s. There are several factors such as social, economic, political, demographic, natural, an
d livelihood strategies that causes to the vulnerability of the status of household food se
curity. (Alam, et al., 2019)
The economy of the Philippines is heavily dependent on agriculture. Most of what
constitutes food security in the country depends on the agricultural sector; therefore,
challenges faced by Filipino farmers and fishermen often have a detrimental effect on
food security in the country.
WHILE Mindanao is a major source of agricultural products in the country it continues
to face lots of challenges. One of the obvious issues the sector continues to face is
connectivity, which is a long standing issue that, despite the government's efforts, is still
a challenge up until today. (Lumawag, 2018)
