A type of function consists


of a set of different
intervals of 𝑥 to define 𝑦 .
1. A user is charged Php300.00
monthly for a particular mobile
plan, which includes 100 free text
messages. Messages in excess of
100 are charged Php1.00 each.
Represent the amount a
consumer pays each month as a
function of the number of
messages 𝑚 sent in a month.
2. A jeepney ride costs Php8.00
for the first four kilometers, and
each additional integer
kilometer adds Php1.50 to the
fare. Use a piecewise function
to represent the jeepney fare in
terms of the distance 𝑑 in
kilometers.
3. A videoke machine can be
rented for Php1,000.00 for three
days, but for the fourth day
onwards, an additional cost of
Php400.00 per day is added.
Represent the cost of renting a
videoke machine as a piecewise
function of the number of days it
is rented.
4. The fee for hiring a guide to
explore a cave is Php700.00. A
guide can only take care of
maximum of 4 persons, and
additional guides can be hired as
needed. Represent the cost of
hiring guides as a function of the
number of tourists who wish to
explore the cave.
5. The cost of hiring a catering
service to serve food for a party is
Php150.00 per head for 20 persons or
less, Php130.00 per head for 21 to 50
persons, and Php110.00 per head for
51 to 100 persons. For 100 or more
persons, the cost is Php100.00 per
head. Represent the total cost as a
piecewise function of the number of
attendees of the party.
6. A photocopy shop charges
₱0.60 per page for orders of less
than 30 pages, ₱0.50 per page for
orders of 30 to 60 pages, and
₱0.40 per page for orders of more
than 60 pages. Which function
best represents the cost
𝐶 for 𝑥 pages of photocopies?
7. Vincent works in a factory of
eyeglasses. He is paid Php20.00 per
eyeglass for the first 10 eyeglasses,
Php50.00 for the next ten
eyeglasses, and Php70.00 for each
set of 10 eyeglasses in excess
of 20. Write a piecewise
function 𝐺(𝑥) that represents
Vincent's earnings.
