Celerio’s Early Life & Education
 April30, 1910 – April 2, 2002
 Born in Tondo, Manila
 Started playing the violin at age 11 taking
lessons from a member of the Philippine
Constabulary Band
 Later performed with the band as its
member while simultaneously attending
Torres High School
Celerio’s Early Life & Education
 Attended the University of the
Philippines Conservatory of Music to
study violin for two semesters
 He received a scholarship at the
Academy of Music in Manila from director
Lippay
 He received the scholarship and became
the youngest member of the Manila
Symphony Orchestra
Celerio’s Career
He was a member of Manila Symphony
Orchestra, but when he fell down a tree
and broke his wrist, he temporarily
worked as a comic illustrator and shifted
to songwriting
 Credited for writing more than 4,000
songs, many of which are dedicated to his
wife and children
 He wrote Filipino folk, Christmas, and
love songs and some of his songs were
used in feature films

Maceda’s Career
 Initially active as a pianist, he appeared in
France, Philippines, andUSA from 1935–
1957, during which time he introduced
many new works, mainly by French
composers, and pioneered a French style
of piano playing in The Philippines
 He also appeared as a conductor of
avant-garde music that he arranged for
various Philippine organizations and
UNESCO from 1964–1968 and
introduced Chinese and Philippine music.
Maceda’s Career
 He taught as Professor of Piano and
Ethnomusicology at the University of The
Philippines from 1952–1990, where he
was named a University Professor in 1988
and as Professor Emeritus until 2004
 He has also given lectures throughout
the world
